I have a PCMR and also looked at a pile of receiver stamps out there in the internet.

Not all the receiver stamps, to me, look the same. Vast majority do, a few I find look a little off. BUT: as we all know stamps get applied inconsistently and so maybe they just impact differently and as a result look a little different.

So: Are there a lot of fakes out there? Does anyone here have an example of a fake stamp? And a description of how to tell?

All the pics below look similar to me except the last one. Top of the "W" and bottom of the "W" look off to me.

I haven't specifically seen a fake PCMR stamp but it certainly wouldn't surprise me. If it makes the gun more valuable SOMEONE SOMEWHERE is trying to fake it.

That last one does look different.

I don't think they are faked( yet anyway). A lot of differences with hand struck stamps even with the same die. Throw in tiny differences between stamps along with large indifference on the part of the person wielding the hammer and you get no two exactly alike kind of thing, like snowflakes.
If the price of PCMR rifles began to double and triple I can see it happening. Less than 1/4 of rifles purchased have been found and noted on the winchester collector forum. Lots still out there though some likely have not survived the last 80 years for any number of reasons.
