Pedersoli 1874 Sharps

I'm planning on buying a Pedersoli sharps rifle from Loyalist arms in Halifax(don't know of anyone else that deals in Pedersoli in Canada)The model I would like to get is the Billy Dixon.I know little about these guns ,so my problem is what calibre?I have never fired one of these guns . I was leaning towards a 45-110 . I was told that I could always load lighter say the same as a45-70 and use a filler and still have the extra if I wanted . What is the recoil like on a 45-110 ,would a 45-90 be a better choice? Iwill be doing my own hand loads using black powder,so I would also like to know of any good places to buy cases and dies and anything else I might need,Are there any suppliers in B.C.
Any advice or help anyone can give would be most appreciated

I think 45/70 is the best all round choice. Even in blackpowder 45/110 in full loads is going to kick. 45/70 is a lot of fun to shoot, and you can go through 50 rounds without ant shoulder problems.The trick in mid or long range shooting is working up the right load,and doing it the same every time, the fewer variables the better. I have three Pedersoli sharps rifles, and for the price the quality is excellant.If you are looking for a good bullet , i would suggest the Lyman 535 grain Postell mould. It can be bought at Wholesale Sports Calgary.May i ask what Loyalist arms wants now for the Billy Dixon model.

If most of your use is about targets, a .45/70 will do all you need - and will match anything a .45/120 will do for hunting if you go with smokeless. Pressures will put a limit to that gleam in your eye faster than case capacity will. Don't see a need for a .45 bigger than the /70 myself, but you should buy whatever thrills you.

If big cases burning lots of powder thrills you, there is a Pedersoli Hi Wall in .45/120 at Russell's in Calgary. Has the Soule type rear sight, comes with moulds and assorted other tidbits, all for about $1900. And looks almost unfired... Not a Sharps, but yet again, I like the High Wall better than the Sharps - personal preference yet again...

The price for a Billy Dixon from Loyalist with a 4% increase for 2006 puts it at about $1700. with about a 3 month back order wait.

1874 sharps

Grandlund firearms carries the full line of pedersoli sharps and i would stick with a 45/70 I have had a 45/90 Highwall 30" badger barrel and had nothing but problems. Jenkinson & Son has all the brass dies and anything else you will need Kerry Jenkinson is in Grand Forks BC

I have a Pedersoli Sharpes long range rifle in 45/70. The 45/70 Cart is available anywhere, in stores, online etc. Almost common like dirt some fellas say. You can load down or up with the 45/70. Nice & gentle load would be 32.5 gr IMR 4895 with a 325 gr flat nose bullet @ .459 dia or hotter with 51gr. IMR 3031 with a hard cast 405 gr bullet.
Basically you can shoot black powder or smokeless. Smokeless will give you the power or similar range as the 45-90, 45-110. You can buy 45/70 brass cheap, all the others will cost you more, not to mention dies, wads, filler. If you use smokeless wit the others, kinda makes it pointless
