So I bought a pedersoli 1886 sporting in 45-70 with full length mag tube and octagon barrel a little while back. I love it and it shoots great. The only problem I have with it is that the wood forend moves a little every time I handle it. It’s starting to really bother me because it’s such a nice gun and it makes it feel cheaply made. I have cheap guns that have no rattles and all the wood fits nice and tight without movement.

Has anyone else had this problem? It looks like the wood forend shrunk a little or the end cap has moved forward? It’s been like this since I got it new. It looks like the end cap needs to move towards the receiver about 1/16 to close up the gap. I would post some pictures if I knew how. Can the end cap be moved? Or should I be looking at putting a shim in there? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I haven’t taken it apart yet because I’m waiting for some hollow ground screwdrivers so I don’t damage the nice screws.

I'm pretty sure you cannot just slide the fore stock back into the receiver as the mag tube is notched to accept the barrel band screw.

What you might try is sliding the fore stock out a bit and wrapping the end of the fore stock in paper and then re seat. You might need several types of paper (tissue, printer, cash register receipt etc) to get the thickness you need. Once you have the paper shim just right, you can secure it to the fore stock with shellac.

Good luck
