I have a nice Marlin 336 32 spec waffle top and am debating having it tapped for a scope or possibly putting a Williams peep tyoemsight on it to preserve its original condition. I want to use it for bear over bait barrels so anyone tell me what the advantage or disadvantage s may be ? We are deep in the bush and I noticed with another rifle the the sights disappeared pretty quick. Looking for any advice and it will be appreciated

i shot only one bear over bait long time ago. i had a leupold 3-9x40 with a german 4 reticle and i needed one shot and only left the scope at 4 if it can help you.

depending the shooting distance you re at.

good luuck and good hunting.

The advantage of a scope is that you're shooting at a black animal in the shadows late in the evening or early morning. The better you can see the more precisely you can place your bullet.

The disadvantage of scoping your particular rifle is that unmolested waffle tops are somewhat collectible and you'll knock a couple of hundred bucks of the value if you drill & tap it.

The receaver peep sight on your 336, with the biggest aperature hole is what I would use.
If the biggest aperature is not available to you then drill it out as big as you can.
Plus do not use a TARGET peep disc as they have a large O.D.
I have done many of these for just what you want. The only real advantage with a scope
is that you can shoot in darker conditions (sooner in morn. & latter in evening) BUT the
BIG peep hole is very close to a scope. I know as I have done this.
With Regular OPEN sights you will loose 30 min. in morn. & 30 min. in evening.

The last couple bears I shot came to the bait in the last minutes of legal light. I was glad to have a good scope. I think with iron sights I might have been out of luck....

Another option (wait for it, blasphemous) of increasing low light condition, easy acquisition without permanent modification to your old waffle top 336 would be to remove your original buckhorn rear sight and add a simple short rail so that a red dot sight could be used.
