Peep sight in scope base?

I saw one of these somewhere but can't remember where or who made it. As I recall it was designed to fold flat in the rear scope base and would pop up when the scope was removed. Seems such a device would be an excellent backup if the scope went south. I know such sights are available for the AR-15 etc. but these wouldnot work on a hunting rifle.

I've checked the usual suspects' websites and not found anything so it may well have been an old item that is no longer available.

Redfield used to make scope bases with a flip up "peep sight." That was a long time ago, my friend. Like thirty years or so.

There is one on one of the auctions right now . It is made by Redfield and I believe it fits a 700 Remington. I saw it Christmas Eve while surfing. It is either Gunsamerica, Gunbroker, Auctionarms or possibly Ebay.
 
Thanks for the info, folks. I am familar with the XS and NEGC sights that can be put on a Weaver base (there is also one from Talley) and one of those may well be the way to go. The particular rifle I am thinking of putting this on is a BSA-sporterized P-14 that has had Weaver bases added (the rear one shimmed since the cut-down rear of the receiver is not the same height as the receiver ring) so the old Redfield may not fit anyway, plus I'd have to replace the front base as well, a small detail I neglected to consider when I posted the question. OTOH, I've been thinking of getting a small milling machine at some point so this might be a good project as I am not in a hurry.

Here is one on a BRNO - has an integral peep pop-up in the rear scope base.

The BRNO pop-up receiver sight is from BRNO themsleves, and is adjustable for windage and elevation.Used to be on all the early ZKK series rifles. The later ones did not have the sight, and today's CZ rifles don't either, of course.

I have had two of these rifles, both 375s and while the sights were neat, they were not really that practical. The aperture was too small for hunting.

Hi Ted - was shooting mine at the range today and found it just fine - the aperature was larger than what I had on my Sako peep sight. It is obvious to me how to adjust for windage, but how do you adjust for elevation?

Hi Rob,

IIRC, there is a small adjustment screw in the base that the peep sits on. There are actually two screws, one that locks the windage slide in place and the other one, towards the front of the reciever, adjusts elevation.

I found the aperture fine for target shooting, no problem there, but it didn't work well afield, especially when wanting to shoot quickly in dark timber or heavy brush.

My idea of a good aperture sight is that you don't have to find it at all. Just look through it and plaster the front bead on what you need to hit. I could never do that quickly with the BRNO.

I've got one on a custom P-14 Enfield 300 WM a buddy gave me. It is screwed into the end of the one piece scope base.

It's called the Little Ace or Little Buddy or something.

I've never had the scope off to try it.
