I have a pre-64 Winchester Mod 94. What are my options for peep sights? I remember seeing one in a gun magazine called "One-ragged Hole" and it fit into the factory dovetail on the barrel. Anybody ever seen one or know if they are readily available in Canada?

... 'Easier to get, either a Lyman or Williams sight that simply mounts on the receiver. Maybe, even and old Marbles one. Different apertures are available if you need a "finer sight picture" . I'm using a Williams; it's rugged, fairly easy to adjust, and with a scrounged up smaller aperture screwed in , grouping is not bad and it's quick to use ! .... David K.

The one ragged hole sight, is in my opinion not a true peep sight.
It's too far from your eye to take advantage of the automatic centering of the eye that takes place with a traditional receiver, or tang sight.
They are in fact little better than the traditional buckhorn sight.
They also suffer from the same short sight radius that makes the factory open sight so poor, and block a large portion of your field of view.

I'll go with David on this one. I put a Williams receiver sight on my .307 a week after I got it back in '95. I've never budged from my 150 gr. handloads and it's never budged from its zero.

I would have to side with Cannuck and Dorm here.
Once I changed out the original factory rear sight, for the Williams FP, on a
30-30 Winchester Carbine. The new "Fire site," I also mounted up front, is about a third smaller in size.

Cannuck has it 100%, right there, in his post.

In 2005, I took out a deer at a long 260 yards.
Of course, this was after three months of rifle practice, prior to hunting.

I ordered the one ragged hole, and tried to figure out how to mount it. I called and spoke to staff who advised me that it would NOT fit the pre '64 model 94. I had to return it.
So, now I am also looking for a peep sight for my model 94. I think what you (we) need to know is what will fit the PRE '64. Can someone confirm that the Williams and/or Lyman and which model will mount to a pre '64 without any new drilling or tapping?

Welcome to this thread TonyMo....
Example: My 30-30 Winchecter Carbine, made in 1954, so it is a Pre 64, top eject, of course.

Therefore, a Williams Foolproof (FP) receiver rear peep sight (Top Eject model) sight will fit it.

No drilling and tapping required.
I have no experience with the Lyman model, so someone else can answer this for you.......

According to Chuck Hawks, the Lyman fits the pre-64's that were factory D/T for a receiver sight like my 'new" 1962 model. Can anyone else confirm?

Your Williams looks much like the Lyman that I put on my 94. Is the aperature a little right of center? This is my first try with a peep and after sighting in at 100 yards with very consistent groups, I have noticed that the aperature is visually right of center. This does not make sence to me as the front sight seems centered, but the aperature is well to the right of the bore.

Ooops! wrong pic selected, but question still the same:redface:

I have an Ashley ghost ring apreture that stradles the bolt on an angle eject 94 that is drilled and tapped. Nice sight and will take Williams eye apretures for target or hunting. It's a very compact and solid sight that is fully adjustable for windage and elevation.

.... Yes ! From personal knowledge, the Williams will definitely fit ! Easy to mount, locktite if you have it, just to be safe ! .... Remove the factory rear if you have a "blank" to put in the old dovetail, or just cut off the rear, leaving the portion that forms the dovetail mounting in place..... David K.

IMO - use clear nail polish not locktite. Even the blue locktite can sometimes be really difficult to get off, especially on a small diameter hole.

I was extremely fortunate when a buddy gave me an old Redfield reciever sight, identical to the Lyman 66A for my 30-30.

Great sight picture. The groups still aren't great out of my 1974 Model 94 though, but this is just the gun and me. Not the sight's fault.

I wish my 1927 Model 94 had the reciever drilled for the sight, but it doesn't.

levi- i find the same for any tang sight. they foul up a 2 handed carry.

doesn't mean i don't like them tho. i have a couple on range rat rifles.
with my eyes i find rcvr sights just about perfect. i still feel a good scope gives the fastest target aquisition, but i like peeps. particularily lymans.
williams FP work just fine, but i like the look of steel sights.
i have a lyman on my winnie 64a. makes a nice package for bush skulking.
