Peeps with front Hoods

Anyone using a Front hood on their Peep set up?

Hoods are generally to protect the small fragile bead sights....All of my peep sights are set up with sourdough front posts. Very durable an easy to sight in for a 6 oclock hold or "dotting the i".....and no hood required

I was told many years ago by a gunsmith and match shooter, that the hood protected the front post and bead style sights from glare to give a better sight picture as well as to protect them from being knocked about .
Dunno how true that is , but it makes sense.

It works well in target shooting... lousy in hunting unless hood removed as far as I am concerned. That sourdough post is the way to go for hunting.

On precision peep rifles the front sigth hood usually include notches/treads for front sight peep inserts. Just look at a Biathlet's rifle.

Try centering the hood before putting the post on the target. You can use a bigger aperture

Precision peep sights are completely different from your run of the mill blade hunting sight however!
This rifle has a Brno front sight with a replaceable blade .

This target rifle has a front sight globe with replaceable inserts

I bought a peep sight for my CZ 550 FS. Unfortunately the stock front blade is too short. The fiber optic one I bought is also too short. A bummer because it took a while to file and fit. I recently ordered the tallest OEM blade I could find, waiting for it to arrive. Wondering if it will be weird using it with the front hood, but it looks quite fragile so hunting without it would be risky I think. This chunky sourdough post looks quite nice. NECG makes them. Should have ordered one when I bought the peep… Can’t wait for my setup to finally work!

I have a crudely sporterized Ross M10 with the hood on the front sight.

It has a rear aperture sight on the reciever with a pretty crude notch sight on top of it. You have to tip up the aperture sight on a hinge to use it. I never did, I just sighted my target using the notch and the front sight with the hood on. I have never taken the hood off in 56 years. I shot my first several deer with that rifle using the notch sight.

I have used a fibre-optic front sight on a hunting rifle. it can use the physical protection of a hood, but it needs to be exposed to the light. So I cut the hood in half.
