Hello gunnutz, has anyone had success using a pellet pistol on grouse? I've thought about carrying one when in the bush.

I'm thinking a pneumatic (hand pump) pistol would do better than a CO2 cartridge, because cold temperatures in winter could lower air pressure in the cartridge, but I don't know for sure?

Thanks

Would work as good as anything else if you could hit em with it;)
Too Bad for those of us in BC though....even a "Pellet Pistol" is a NO-NO for Hunting here :bangHead:

A pellet pistol is absolutely limited to head shots IMHO. I've shot several of them with 177 pellet rifles, and so I believe pellet guns ( even 1000 fps) are not reliable for anything but perfect body shots, head shots are much more humane and effective. If you have an accurate pistol, within 10 yds or so and took only clean head shots you'd do OK. I have no expereince with a .22 cal pellet gun, but I think the biger pellet may improve your kill/wound ratio.

Yah and its a funny story too!. On our way to go moose hunting one morning. My buddy was waiting in the boat under some Larch( I think those are the trees that loose their needles) Mother nature calls on the way to the dock, so I stop to relieve myself. meanwhile buddy is making noise in the boat scaring some partridge out of the trees by the boat. Well doesn't one of them fly directlt towards me and FLYS right under the GOLDEN STREAM. I pull out my pellet gun , in mid stream, and shoot the bird, now only 3 yards away from me. Then I yell to my buddy. He would you grab that while I finish.

Buddy was rassing me for weeks saying my "branch" was to small, thats why it had to land on the ground. Hasn't he ever heard of shrinkage:D

Anyway. in colder weather I found pelletguns to be unrelyable, especially the co2 ones. The seals harden up to much!

I have shot them with a pellet rifle at 1000fps but a good pistol is only about 400 to 450.Unless you head shoot them it wouldn't have jam.

A springer or Pneumatic throwing a .22 cal pelletaround 4-450 FPS is your best bet. I used to do up alot of "grouse getters" for the hunters here (essentially hotrodded the old crosman MK 1's) and put a laser sight on. You are limited to wearing the gun in a shoulder holster in cool weather though.

Personally, I carry a Webley Tempest in .22 (looking for another BTW if anybody has one). Takes alot more practice to shoot a springer accurately....but pellets are cheap.

I'd also look at the Benjamin pumpers...also a great grouse gun.

I had been interested in the crosman 2240, it's sort of like the 10/22 of airguns for the number of mods foating around. And the 22 cal pellet has more hitting power, but it is CO2

they work good my buddy uses one alot but remember to keep it under 495 anything faster the pistol becomes restricted and thats a NO-NO

A brief reminder to other readers - some provinces (bc for example) specifically forbid the use of pellet pistols in hunting. Check your regs.

Thanks for all the responses and info. I'm starting to think a pellet pistol might not work as good as I first thought. I don't think I could do head shots all the time (if any:rolleyes: ), and don't want to wound'em. I think I'll just back-pack a 22 rifle with me.

For anyone interested, last night I found a website in the U.S. They have some good info and stats for pellet guns. Here's the link http://www.pyramydair.com/

This is from Alberta:

set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting any wildlife:

* an arrow equipped with an explosive head,
* a firearm that is capable of firing more than one bullet during one pressure of the trigger or a firearm that can be altered to operate as such,
* a light,
* a shotgun of a gauge greater than 10,
* a device designed to deaden the sound of the report of a firearm,
* recorded wildlife calls or sounds, or an electrically operated calling device,
* a pistol or revolver,

I have used a pump 1322 Crossman for years on grouse - in .22 caliber. Gosh, getting old - used it in fall timber cruises when I was going to university in the early 80's :eek:

Killed a lot of grouse with head shots or shooting at the base of the wing. Wing shots usually knock them over so you can run up and grab them and wring their necks. However, I would recomend using a 177 to get a higher velocity.

Also, if you put the pellet in backwards, it will mushroom very nicely and I have found with little loss of accuracy.

If you are in a jurisdiction where you can use one, dont hesitate - just wear it outside your jacket in a shoulder holster.

Some of my chums didnt have much luck with CO2 pellet pistols in cold weather, but I never used one so I cant comment

Just a noob question:

Why is it a no no for a pellet pistol in BC?

Is it because carrying anything that looks like a handgun illegal?
