I would like to know why every time some one asks about getting a scope people are allways recomeding some sort of Leupold. First off in there lower and middle end scopes they are no better than Bushnells and some other brands of equal quality and usally have a higher price tag. To get a Leupold that is signifiantly better than some of these other brands the money is getting up there and at that point spend the extra cupple hundred bucks and buy a swarski. An example of the crapper optics for equal money can be easley seen in the lower end scopes. I bought a 3x9x40 bushnell 3200 for some where around $300 and a buddy bought a Leupold for roghly the same price. When we were at the range when the light got a bit low my bushnell clearly gatherd more light than the Leopold of roghtly the same price.

the things i like about leupold are as follows, the great warranty, light weight, tough finish, clarity seems better than my bushnell 3200 and the fact that you can get the turrets and reticles changed on most models if you should so desire.
the things i don't like are as follows, the price, the fact my vxII 3-9x40 still has slot turrets and the mag ring is very tight.

I dropped a 20 year old Vari-X II out of a tree stand and smashed the glass and crosshairs. I sent it back to Leupold, they rebuilt, re-sealed and sent it back to me. They charged me $11.00 shipping to fix something that was totally my fault,
I will never hunt with anything else,
There isn't another riflescope company out there that would have done that.

hutchster, send it off to Korth group. I had the same problem with an old Vari X II. A week away at Korth and it came back good as new.
I worked a gun counter for a number of years and sent a lot of scopes of every make in for warranty. Sold a lot of Leupolds to guys waiting for their Swaro, Ziess, Bushnell that had to have something to hunt with. Leupolds are on all my rifles, am I obsessed, no, I have Steiner binos, a Swaro spotting scope and a Leica rangefinder, all of them work great and the next scope I buy will be a Leupold unless I win the 649, then I'll buy two..

And if you had a Burris FF II, you would even have a clearer view in low light than your 3200, which is in the same price range.

warranty and eye relief
I have had to sen 3 of my Leupolds back for service over the years. All of them returned to me in just over a week with no charge for repairs. That is a product & service I will continue to use.
My Bushnell Bino's took 6 months to get repaired. Not acceptable in my books.

Sad to hear Bushnells service has slipped. I remember about 10 yrs ago sending in an old Trophy scope, and I told the guy I was panicked a bit because deer season was starting in 3 weeks. I received a new Elite scope in 3 days. I have also sent in bino's back in the day, and received new ones within 2 weeks.
I have now switched to Burris, simply for the price I find the eye relief better and they are much clearer in low light situations. I have no idea if their warranty service is any good, and I hope I never have to find out.

On the plus side,Leupold offers good warranty,good durability,and fairly light compact scopes.
On the negative side,the price is high for what you get,the eye relief on some Leupolds varies greatly when changing magnification,and they continue to ship out scopes that require two hands to adjust the magnification.

It's a combination of things. Warranty, as stated, is beyond reproach. The customer service in general is quite good if you're just looking for more information. The optical quality is on par with the rest of the manufacturers in their class, better in some cases, worse in others.
I have had better warranty service through Nikon only because they got my scope and sent me a brand new one in return (my fault even!) and the Monarchs are outstanding, and for the money I'm also partial to the Burris FFII's over the VX1 and 3200 and other lower-cost scopes.
IMO over a Conquest, I'd take a VX3 or Monarch Pro. After hearing about how long non-direct replacements are handled by Nikon, I'd probably stick with Leupold. Mine are the older Vari-X III models and both are great, never a problem.

I had a 2-7X Leup, used for about 7-8 years and sold it for slightly MORE than I paid for it. Last week I sold 2 Leupolds (bought used 6 years ago) for $25 less than I paid for them. I can ALWAYS sell a Leupold if I decide I want something else for a good return on my $. Their optics in the lower end may not be as bright as others but they are very rugged, reliable and more compact than most others. I think you're correct about the optics but only at the lower end. ALL of the scope problems my friends have had has been with other scopes. I'm sure Leups do have problems (even I've sent ONE back in the last 25 years)but in my experience they're not that common and are resolved quickly. Did anyone mention their cust service and warranty?

Yes, all Leupolds break, every single one!
Manufacturers develop reputations because of the products they make and the service they provide. Leupold's reputation is well earned and certainly not the result of hearsay.
I had doubts about whether it was my rifle or my scope, so I sent my scope into Leupold for service. They quickly gave it a little tune up and sent it back. I've since learned the problem was in fact my rifle barrel, and not the scope. I give them great credit for quickly servicing the scope and verifying it was now in good order and returning it. No run around, just fast service. I'd recommend Leupold any day.
