The reason I ask is because I have a chinese sks with a tapco stock on it, with tapco mags. Brought it out to the range the other day and the magazine fits nice and snug into the stock. Problem is loading the first round into the chamber i have to hit it with the charging handle two or three times in order to get the first round in. Once that round is in there is no problem with the remaining four rounds being jammed at all. So wondering if someone could help shed some light on the issue and their opinion between the two magazine manufacturers.

Both will need to be fitted. I found the tapco a little better then my promag. My promag is metal however. The Tapco once fitted and filed will accept stripper clips. The promag wouldn't. The back is to open on the promag and the cartridges jump out of the back.

Onto your issue. If you have your factory mag take a look at the feed lips on either side and compare them to your tapco. You will notice that your tapco feed lips are longer and thicker then the stock box mag. This is by design so they can be fitted. Start by fling them down low and slow and cycle some snap caps while doing it till you get it right. You need to take down the front inner edge. You want the bullets on either side of the mag to be tilted up inward toward the feed ramp.

I can't comment on the tapco, but of the magazines I have tried, promag has been flawless. After initial filing at the back to let it fit, it fits tight and clicks in perfectly. It definitely accepts strippers, and I find better then the stock mags as they appear to be pinned better so it only loads the five rounds and leave the sixth round on the stripper.I have both the 30 and 40 round and both work perfectly with no other modification or work then the original fitting. As a note, I am using these with an archangel stock.

The metal one from westrifle is terrible though, just jams all the time. Not sure of the manufacturer of that one though.

I just ordered two of these Baur 5/30 rounders.
Hopefully they function as well as my Tapco ones, after some minor fitting of course.

I've played with a couple of Bauer magazines that a friend owned.

One needed extensive fitting, the other snapped right into place out of the box.
Both worked perfectly when fired.

Are you riding the bolt forward? Make sure you let it snap, my dad kept doing that when I took him out to try his sks.

This. Every time I take someone new to the bush to try out the ol' SKS they do this and the thing doesn't feed. Although thats with normal the magazine, not detachable.

Myself and Dad003 both found that first round of the copper washed ammo from the Marstar package would not properly feed, the rest of the rounds fed perfect though.

I don't own any of the Promags but I do have several of the Tapcos. I put over 700 rounds of surplus through the one tapco mag feeding a Norinco using stripper clips on the weekend. Not a single jam or malfunction. When I bought the mags I had to file the back of the feed lips to except stripper clips.

My Baur Arms mags arrived from Wolverine today,2mns with a file an all 3 fit snugly onto my Chinese SKS,they feed flawlesly, and can even be fed with the stripper clips!
For $22.95 each mag I have to say I am bloody impressed, especially in comparison to the price of Tapco and Promag mags.
I think I'm gonna order myself another 3.

I have two tapco 5/20 rounders and a Promag 5 rounder fitted to my Russian SKS. They're not kidding when they say some modifications may be required ... took me few hours to figure out where and how much material to take off to make them fit. 300 rounds later they function flawlessly. The promag required more filing to fit properly but it also feels much more sold and durable than the tapco.

I had a couple of the Tapco's. No issue with fitting/feeding, but they didn't play well with stripper clips so I traded them off for... Oh, I forget now, something of roughly equivalent value to a friend.

I'm thinking of picking up a couple of the Baur 5/30's on the rumour they work with stripper clips out of the box.

Really, they're just for show. Still pinned to 5 rounds so no real advantage over the internal box. So if they don't work with stripper clips, you end up losing functionality for cosmetics, and I couldn't be bothered.

They work 100% with stripper clips, thats how I load my Baur mags!

have tried SEVERAL mags (both plastic and metal-5/10/20/30/40 rounders) in SEVERAL sks
...with proper fitting i have made all work (with stripper clips also)
compare specs to a reliable stock metal mag (that came with the gun)
and make the mags as close as possible to these specs...i have found this to work the best

My tapco mags just needed a bit of filing and clips feed no problem.
I haven't tested my two Baur mags yet.
