So I have been shooting the 168 gr Nosler ballistic tips and found some good loads with tight groups. After searching threw the forums I've realized that the 168 is not ideal for anything past 800 yards.

I've changed my load to the 180 gr nosler ballistic tip and gonna do some load development wit them but I've been getting mixed reviews from people. Some saying it is to heavy for a 308 win and more suited for the 300 win mag and that it won't preform

I have a 1:10 twist barrel
The 180 gr has a bc of .507
I've loaded them with varget from 43 to 45 with half grain increments
2661ftps with 45 grains and about 2554 with 43 grains

I am keen on this round or a dual purpose hunting target round and nOt have to worry about changing the scope zero every time I want to switch rounds

So what do you gurus think? Good round? Bad round?

Cheers

One bullet to consider is the Berger 185 VLD Hunting(bright orange box) G7 BC of 0.281 or a G1 BC of 0.510. I load them in my dad's .308 700P and it shoots them very well @ range. The seating can be finicky but if you follow Bergers tutorial on their website you will sort them out in short order. I have now shot Goat, Moose and 3 years ago a Grizzley with these loaded in a 30-06. For target shooting they perform superbly (when tuned) and you will find that the .308 will perform much better @ range. The BC of that bullet is very good for a 30 cal. Your time of flight will be shorter @ range giving the wind and other elements less time to act on the bullet. your down range energy will be better also. This is a realy good crossover hunting/target bullet.I used this bullet for the same thing you are looking for.

My humble opinion: your rifle twist is fast enough to shoot those bullets. It now depends on the speed it leaves your barrel..if you don't like to load to hot and/or have a 20inch barrel...don't count to much on it passed 800m. You have to keep it supersonic. Try doing some simulations on JBM ballistics: it will give you an idea

185gr bullets are becoming more and more popular in F/TR for their high BC: they stay supersonic longer than 168s and their weight gives them an edge in wind bucking capability over the 155s.

Try the 185 Bergers juggernauts as they are really easy to tune (on 43grs of varget) or the 185 Matrix.

Both are great bullets but neither are recomended for hunting.

target shooting and hunting.... two entirely different things. you are going to make compromises one way or the other so just taget shoot with the best hunting bullet you can find. personally, for te cost of bullets these days, i'd spend a couple hundred bucks and get a hunting rifle and leave your "target gun" at home.

x2 for the Berger 185 VLD. The hunting and target versions are nearly identical (different jacket thickness on the hunting version, IIRC) so you only need to develop one load, or just use the hunting version for targets.

awesome to know its only the sierras doing this

i might just have to grab some of these bergers in the 185 or maybe wait till jerry gets more of those juggernaughts in

Berger makes a 168 hybrid that looks pretty good! Mind you the BC on the 185 hybrid is pretty sweet too.Be interesting to see how the 168 hyb does when it goes close to 3000fps?

I got a box of 185 Hybrids. They shoot really well. The only thing I found that annoyed me was that they are very long. I have no problem feeding 185 VLD's and Juggernauts out of my mag (sako makes a fairly long mag compared to many) but no chance with the Hybrids.
