Hey guys. I'm looking into a gun to do some percision shooting with. This gun is to become a better shot before I step up to a larger caliber. I was thinking a heavy barrel because they look cooler :onCrack: . I'm currently looking into the CZ Varmint or Savage MK II BV. I will be scoping it. I will be shooting 50-100+yrds or more with it.

Who do you guys think of that choice?

Anything else I should look into?

Thanks in advance.

I would personally get the CZ Varmint over the Savage. I think that the CZ's are built better. I havn't actually shot that particular savage model but I would imagine that both these guns would be very accurate. I know for a fact that the CZ's can shoot.

What caliber were you thinking of getting?

Ok - I would probably get the CZ varmint. A buddy of mine has this gun and it is very accurate, and made very well. The only slight problem (which really isn't a problem :D) he had with it is when you first get it the bolt is quite rough to operate. After shooting a brick or so of high velocity ammo through it though and cycling the bolt a couple hundered times that seemed to looosen it up. The gun is quite accurate at 100 yards with Lapua superclub and not to bad either with Federal champion.

Theree is a C.I.L. 190 at Ellwood Epps for sale, and I believe there was one on the exchange. They are made by Anschutz and a re very good rifles.
Slug has a Few Martinis also, but I am not sure if you want to spend that kind of money.
I do not know how much a new CZ is...

shoot/budget

I went to the savage. The cz's are great guns, but with a design flaw.
The bolt throw is designed so that it cannot accept anything but a high mount when you put a 40mm target scope in it. Mine had to be so high that my face could not touch the stock. The Savage BV is as accurate as the CZ and at less $.
I know I'V opened a can of worms here but it's only MHO.:D
Cheers & KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY!

Budget, eh? Okay, to be different: Cooey model 75 ($75-$100) drilled and tapped w/ bushnell scope from Cdn Tire. Whole thing would be way under what you'd pay for the others. You might even be able to find one at a gun show. I saw one in very good shape at a gun show in Halifax last year for $175.

Any of the older Mossbergs are cool too.

Looking for old (used) or new rifle?

If old is fine, these very knowledgeable gentlemen pointed you in the right direction.
If you must have a new one, I'd choose the Savage FVT. You can scope it or you can shoot it with irons. If you're sure you'll never shoot irons, then the FV would do.

I was not aware of that design flaw when scoping a cz452. I don't know how much I'll like having the scope mounted high.

My budget for the gun is under $500 with glass hopefully (cheapest I can find the cz452 varm. for is $470 local). I don't care if it's new or used.

I have a Rem 552 with iron sites. I use that just for plinking away. I can empty that sucker quick with one arm shooting sideways. :50cal:
Time to get bullet over bullet holes.

I am a Savage fan. I own the Savage MK II BV 22lr. Love it. I bought it from CGN'er "yodave" on the EE forum. Freakin awesome! I currently have a Tasco world class 3 x 9 x 40, but I am waiting for my Millet 6 x 25 x 56 to arrive and mount on it. Huntsman and I have laid waste to local gopher fields at stupid distances with it.

hakx....I thought you bought that for your son:rolleyes:

Both the cz and the savage are good choices. The new savage accutrigger models are very accurate and the triggers are a great step up from the older model. The trigger in the cz can be made even better with the brooks trigger kit. both of these rifles shoot within a inch at fifty yards with cheap winchester promotional ammo. it boils down to how it fits you and your preferrence for wood or synthetic stocks. the heavy barrel savage with the synthetic stock felt really front heavy to me, not balanced to well, even my savage FVT with laminated stock is very muzzle heavy and you feel it when you shoot in any position off of the bench or prone. The cz is very well balanced and quite honestly if kept in excellent condition will hold its value for a very long time. the issue with the rings on the cz does not effect me, my cheek is on the stock and the scope is in perfect alignment. you will be happy with either one I am sure. find a store where you can compair them side by side and make a decision.:D

For $500.00 including scope and rings, you will not be getting a CZ. I have a pre accu Sav that shoots quite well with a Bushnell Banner 4-12 on top that I bought used for $299.00 in a heavy barrel. The toughest thing with any new or used rimfire is to find the ammo it loves the best, in my opinion. FS
