decided id like one or two antique "shooter" revolvers, would you recommend a percussion or cartridge for someone new to these (as well as new to reloading)

if i were to tell you percussion caps themselves are tempremental ( meaning they don't always go bang) what conclusions would you draw; everybody and his dog has primers; percussion caps not so much, and my range doesn't allow black powder- can you see where i'm going? yet?

The antique Colt and Remington revolvers are perhaps cheaper than their cartridge counterparts but they tend to shoot very much high at 25 yards or so. Also is the issue of percussion revolvers being slow to load and quick to empty. The counter point however is that if you go for a legally antique cartridge revolver, you will be faced with some challenges in making shells and loading for them. Not difficult for an experienced person but adds to the learning curve for a newcomer. Apart from price your best bet may be an antique Colt or Smith & Wesson in a "modern" caliber such as 45 colt or 44-40. If price is a concern, your best bet would be to but a new replica cartridge revolver to start with and move into a true antique as you gain experience
