Period correct M48 scope mounts?

A scope on an M48? Heresy! I already know and agree in general with that opinion.

As I get older, my eyes get less and less iron sight friendly. I also like hunting with my milsurps and don't want to give that up just because my eyes are letting me down. I have the Badace Tactical scout scope mount for the M48 and I will be mounting it up this year, hopefully to hunt with this fall if it works out well.

On the off chance it turns out the mount doesn't hold zero or the whole scout scope thing doesn't work for me, are there any period correct drill and tap mounts for the M48? The Germans in WW1 and WW2 used a variety of mounts that were essentially very similar to D&T Weaver mounts that go on the receiver ring and rear bridge. Something like that would be acceptable to me as not destroying the character of the rifle while offering optics for my old eyes. I understand this will devalue the rifle and I can live with that, but I don't want it to look like modern optics mounts bodged onto a 75 year old rifle.

Is there anything out there for me?

Thanks,
Mark

You need ZRak mounts, they used several different versions during the civil war.

There is a website about Yugoslav civil war sniper rifles. Many of them were put together with commercial mounts and scopes but they seemed to prefer the ZRak type.

Likely because they were made there and more available.

I have seen a couple of rifles set up with the correct scope and mounts. Looked good, shot well. Not in the same category as a vintage rifle with Weaver bases and a Tasco scope.

There ya go peaches. This is how it's done.

Just a brief comment about the installation of those mounts...
This is not simply a matter of laying out, drilling and tapping some holes. A milling machine was used on the bases in order to get a good fit on the receiver, without machining the receiver itself.

I understand what they look like. I need to know where to get such bases and rings.

There is a German company, Superfekt OR Montagen, that makes an identical mount.

I have a set on a hunting rifle.

The information I have is a few decades old now as the box they came in is marked "West Germany"

This is the address,

Thanks for that, Motagen leads to EAW Montagen, which still makes the same type of mount as shown in r005t3r's post. They certainly aren't cheap and their North American dealer doesn't list anything for the M48 Mauser, but it's a place to start.

The mounts: https://www.eaw.de/en/produkte/produktkategorie-schwenkmontage/

As stated by tiriaq, the bases need to be milled to fit the M48 reciever ring.

The set I have are on a large ring 98 action.

The rear receiver bridge needs to be milled flat to the profile of the rear mount.

Back when several of the Yugo sniper rifles from the civil war were being imported into North America, I saw a couple of dozen that were in a shipment.

Maybe a third of them looked like the rifle in R0053r's pic.

The rest were a hodge podge of different mounts, one with a Soviet type with a mount for the Dragunov which was mounted directly to the stock. (wish I had been able to look closer)

The others all used commercial Z RAK scopes in commercial mounts.

A few of the rifles had unit and rack numbers and a few were personalized. None of them could reveal their secrets but considering how that stressful situation went, the imagination ran wild and neccessity became the mother of improvise and adapt.

im pretty sure on the bay you can still find the correct mount for the m48. the reason you see that kind of scope is because the reticle was made for the 8x57 as well in the semi auto sniper used during those wars.

zrak mounts were a yugo copy of eaw, the scope was a copy without patent of sb scope with the help in the day of IOR. they had the choices for different reticles depending on the caliber as well.

i ve seen so called sniper rifles in zastava bolt action m70 270 win and zrak mounts with the zrak scope.but they called everything with a scope a sniper rifle.

your best luck Mark will be to find a croat or someone from bosnia but i have to say it will not be cheap ...
