Pest destruction vs .22 cal pellet type

For barn pigeons (I don't shoot squirrels) I use a sub 500fps 22cal Diana 24, and have found wad cutters (flat) to be the most effective. Even on those things (like most things) shot placement is key. A perfect shot~they fold without even opening their wings. It's instant. An imperfect shot?

My suggestion would be to scope the gun (AO scope, airgun-rated...check D&L Airgun), zero it at the distance you'll be shooting the pests at, maybe practice at that distance, and take the time to set-up the shot when the time comes. Like any varmint hunting~practice practice and the outcome should be exactly as you imagined it would be. Make a bad shot and you might wish you were never asked to help out in the first place.

Wadcutters work best in my experience. I've found a domed pellet in a squirrel a couple of times. Use an accurate wadcutter and you'll do fine.

She wants you to kill the squirrels but is concerned about the babies starving if mom and pop get offed?

I guess she would say her problem was with some over-tame, excessively bold squirrels, not all of them. It seems the worst offender was a female red squirrel and it was the first to go. Overall, there are now 7 fewer of them representing three hours of shooting and all three local SQ colours. Hopefully she will now be able to replace her screens and keep the porch windows open again, ending the bake oven effect she had going. I also do hope the dear woman will take my advice and not be so nice to the rodents in the future, throw rocks at the ones that gnaw on the house, not peanuts.

I used the hollow points BTW, good results.

Some people should know better than to feed rats. Glad to hear that the hollow points worked well for you.

Like me, she has a lot of bird feeders. Unlike me, she deliberately feeds the SQs as well. My feeders are SQ proof, at least to the extent that's possible.

Shot through the head or boiler they wont go far with any pellet, if the gun is fast enough. Gray squirrel skin is *very* tough and they can absorb a lot. I shot squirrels one year (wounded) than again the next (dead) with the pellets from the former year harmlessly part of the body.

If the creatures have been eating nothing but birdseed and walnuts, scorch the hair off with a torch, rub them clean, skin them (maybe a bit over the top but it keeps things clean hair wise) and stew with lemongrass, chili paste, garlic, and sesame. The whole carcass chops into clean bits with a cleaver.

Before you go saying 'I think I just threw up in my mouth' or some other thing...I thought the same thing...gray squirrels are like a cross between farm pork and chicken thigh.

I agree. Squirrels are the tastiest game meat going IMO, nothing better than a couple of good ones well prepared. However I just didn't feel like it in the heat of the summer so these got a quick burial out in the woods, where the coyotes (subspecies coywolves) have no doubt dug them up and enjoyed the treat. You're welcome, varmints.

I can understand that. I would shoot a squirrel or two after supper, process them, and toss them in the freezer until I had a few. Used a Laotian rat recipe I found on Youtube.

This caught my eye because of the above events. I feel I could have saved my lady from committing a terrible crime, I mean if she wasn't already a widow.
