For barn pigeons (I don't shoot squirrels) I use a sub 500fps 22cal Diana 24, and have found wad cutters (flat) to be the most effective. Even on those things (like most things) shot placement is key. A perfect shot~they fold without even opening their wings. It's instant. An imperfect shot?
My suggestion would be to scope the gun (AO scope, airgun-rated...check D&L Airgun), zero it at the distance you'll be shooting the pests at, maybe practice at that distance, and take the time to set-up the shot when the time comes. Like any varmint hunting~practice practice and the outcome should be exactly as you imagined it would be. Make a bad shot and you might wish you were never asked to help out in the first place.
