I have a Swedish Mauser Model 38 (this one is a cut down 1906 CG m96)

I intend to try some handloads as this is one of the rare Swedes that does not shoot very good groups, a t least with Norma surplus or old Imperial 6.5x55 fodder.

I'm going to try some 139 grain bullets.

Do you have a pet load recipe you'd recommend?

Or is there another bullet weight that you suggest?

My buddy has some 160 gr. 6.5 bullets he's going to load for his 6.5x54 MS.

Should I try a batch with them?

TIA

MD,
try Reloader 22 for 6.5x55.
I load around 0.030" away from lands and have really nice groups.
Start around 46gr and go slowly up. My best load is 47.5.
Do not exed more then 49gr.

Here's what I use in my 20" barreled Model 96 Swede:

129 grain Hornady Interlocks
47.5 grains of H-4831
CCI 200 LR primers
Winchester Brass

It shoots great.

My m38 likes 120gr Speers over 47gr RL-19 or 39gr Varget. My 96 likes 129gr and 140gr Hornady's over a max charge of H4831 or RL-19.

My best load to date in both of my M38's is with Remington Brass, Federal 210m primers, 140g Sierra Match King, 35.8 grains Varget, COL 3.060, less than 1 inch groups at 100 yards easily.

In my match rifle with a heavy Gaillard barrel based around a P-17 action, I use 47.5 grains of H4831SC in a Winchester case, ignited by a Federal 210M primer, with either a Sierra 142 or a Hornady 140 A-MAX. The same load also works very well with 140-grain hunting bullets.

If you search around (even in the posts on this thread), most people will agree that H4831 (or the similar Reloder 22 or N560) gives the best results with a 140-grain bullet in this cartridge.

46.5 grains of Rl 22 140 grain Hdy sp 20 thou off the lands!

3/4 moa all day long

That's what I used when I had my Swedish Mauser - It ran at about 2650 fps.
Worked well with Sierra SBT's and Nosler Partition.

Ive sold it and currently working up a load for a Tikka M65, I will be pushing that one a little faster, well see how she handles it. :D

I use 45.5gr -RE22 with 140gr and either 42gr of IMR 4350 or N-204 with 156-160gr bullets for moose/elk/bear........................these will shoot through two moose and a fire hydrant...........almost...Harold

48 Grains of Norma MRP and the 140 Partition. Deadly accurate and about as much velocity as is practical in the Swede. [work up from 3 grains below, please!] Eagleye.

Let's be realistic here, it will shoot through ONE moose, a deer then a fire hydrant,:D

Have you found that MRP is about the same as RL-22 ? I read that they have the same burn rate just that MRP is more consitent and less sensitive (temp).

Pathfinder; RL22 and Norma MRP are VERY close in burning rate, so close that you could get the same FPS variance from one lot to another of RL22. However, MRP is slighly denser, allowing a bit more powder in a case with limited capacity. I have found MRP to be very tolerant of temperature changes. [like it's predecessor, Norma 205] I use MRP a fair bit since I have some laid away from when it was readily available. If I had to use RL22 because of availability, I would probably get by just fine. BC redneck stocks MRP and N204, BTW. Regards, Eagleye.

Pet Load for the 6.5X55 Swede

I have several of these rifles and have found a load they all seem to shoot well.
H4831 46grs, Sierra 140gr matchHP/BT.
Primer win or CCi lge rifle.
In a 29" barrel vel is approx2730F/P/S.
