I just bought a new Winchester 1886 Short Rifle with the 24" barrel. I'm planning on hunting moose deer and black bear with it. What's the best bullet weight and powder for this?

When I get mine I'll be trying the load that works very well in my Guide Gun. It's always sub MOA for 3 shots in that.

420gn Cast Performance WFNGC
48.0gn Reloder 7
Rem Brass
Fed 210M

1800fps.

I've got a 425gn Ranch Dog mould coming (in the mail...). I'm looking forward to trying that out too. If it works out I won't have to buy the Cast Performance bullets any more.

There are lots of pet loads for the 45/70.
 
My choice has always been the 405 bulk bullets.
I think they were Rems when i bought them?
But I think the 350gn Horn FPs are built a little tougher, I sure someone here can confirm that ...or not.
 
For Deer I like the 330 gr. cast Hollowpoints including a new mold the is gas check, with heavy charges of RL-7 in my Marlin. For moose or bear I like 420, 480 and 500gr. WFN and LFN cast bullets with heavy charges of AA2015 or RL-7.
 
45 70 loads

i use a few different ones in my handi rifle,

49gr of IMR 4198 hornady 350gr round nose
quite potent shoots 3" at 150 yrds vel-1904fps

40 gr of H322 500 gr hard cast round nose
very accurate and no leading, using SPG lube on bullet vel 1464fps

also been playing with reloader 7, using a 490 gr lyman postell bullet
30 grains, fairly accurate vel- 1300fps

39 gr IMR3031- 420 GR soft cast flat nose, non gas checked
use cornmeal filler over powder and seat bullet until it lightly compresses
powder, very accurate grouping tears a ragged hole at 50 yrds, vel is around 1400fps, no leading present in bore with soft lead

hope this helps anyone, my handi rifle has a 20" barrel, ballistics may improve in longer barrels, also recoil in the 350gr load is super stout in the handi rifle
but perfectly safe in it

do NOT use the 350 gr load i list in TRAPDOOR ACTIONS!!!!
ONLY USE IN LEVERGUNS AND STRONG ACTIONS!!!!
 
I have been using 42gr of RL-7 with a cast 405gr OMA bullet out of my Marlin Guide Gun. I have a Handi-Rifle as well and it likes 46gr of IMR3031 with the OMA 405gr. I'm not sure if they are safe in your rifle or not, but as always use caution when working up a load.

I have been working on a 450gr cast OMA bullet, but I haven't found the right combination yet.

Give me a holler if you're around, Ive got a few different bullet weights you can try as a sample before you order any. Ive been using 3031 for 350 to 500gr.
 
300grHPs with 55gr of H322 in my Ruger #1 is a good deer load. 50gr of 3031 same bullet is also good. Last year I tryed the new leaverrevilution bullet. It shot great on paper but never seen anything to shoot. Hope this fall.
 
I like 70 grains Cart Blackpowder under a 405 grain bacon grease and bees wax lubbed

bullet . This is in a 1884 trap door and it sure does hit hard. Don't know how much

more you could ask for!
