Pewter Ingots

Sounds like we're having a #### measuring contest!

Well, do I have the biggest? (ingots i mean LOL)

And I haven't even told you guys about the 90 lbs bucket of linotype I got at the same time, also for lead price.
Man that was a good day. I better finish off the big melting pot and burner I started building a little while ago.

I don't even have to go scrounging around for it. My sister haunts all the local thift/junk stores & buys it. So far this 10 lbs cost me a total of $50. That's not bad considering foundry tin is about $22./lb. + shipping & there is a minimum weight to purchase. She just called & picked up a bit more.....:bigHug:

Here is what she brought me. It weighed in at 7-1/2 lbs. Cost $40.

There were 2 picture frames that made up most of the weight, the bigger one was 3.1 lbs. alone, the other about 1-3/4 lb. The bottoms of the goblets were stamped as 94% pewter.
I look forward to melting it into those little ingots....
Thanks sister,.....bring more! LOL.

Got around to reducing it today...

Into these nice little 2 to 2-1/2 oz ingots which will be good to add to a 10 or 20 lb melting pot quite easily.

My tools to do it & the rowell ladle used the first time. When pouring such tiny ingots this ladle is easier to control & being cast keeps it's heat longer giving those few seconds more to make a better job. What a joy to use!

Oh, don't tell Mrs ruffbird I did this little job on her stove or I'm in you know what!:runaway:

For the uniformed, like me, why are you stashing pewter? What do you use it for? Lead isn't supposed to be used in pewter very much anymore, so it can't be for bullets, right?

Pewter has a high Tin content. Added in lead Tin will make the alloy flow better and fill the mold more consistent. So the answer is: yes, pewter(Tin) is great for casting bullets.

On a side note. I bought a tea spoon from Dollarama as it was advertised "pewter". It was pewter indeed. After melting it I've got 31.8 grams usable pewter. I paid 1.5$ for it.
The math says 21.42$/lb. So this was a dead end. At least I had fun playing with molten tin.

Got a pic of it?

Don't worry about not having enough tin, or other alloys, for that matter. I've got a garbage can full of 90% tin solder my neighbour gave me after cleaning out the "hazardous lead material" from his plant. The biggest pain was that it was rosin core solder, and was a real mess to melt and clean and ingotize...

The more you look, the more you'll be able to find, and be able to scrounge even more. I lucked out a few years ago at a scrap yard and got quite a mix of pure, wheelweight, linotype and foundry type, but it doesn't stop me from looking for more.

Anyone ever think of buying pewter knick knacks on Alibaba or something? Not sure how much they weigh or what it would work out to per pound, but might be worth checking out.

Went to a rad repair shop and got a 5 gallon pail of rad dripping's! But it included garbage, rag's, sponge's, and misc plastic sticker's.
I ended up melting/burning the whole lot, plastic pail and all to get 25lbs of 60/40 solder which I cast into 50 round ball's for identification
