Hello,

Im looking at getting the PGW Coyote, and I'm asking for everyones opinion of what Chambering to go with. ITs a short action system, and ill be using it for long range precision , as well as hunting. I hunt deer, bear, moose (If i ever get a tag). So far the debate is between the 308 and 6.5 creedmore. Looking for your opinions on both, as well as any other options you would recommend, and why.

Thanks!
John

Go with the 308, gives you a wide range of bullet weights for it. As well as you can get military surplus ammo for cheap plinking

Any 6.5 caliber ( 260 rem and up would do ) with the right bullet at the right place. Got everything you need for long range and if you practice a lot, hitting at the right place and knowing your limit for hunting won't be a problem. Personally I got a 260 and I love it. I would pick my shots on a moose but who wouldn't?

6.5 creedmore would not be my choice if I was going for moose. Sure, placement is everything, but it's a moose. Something bigger will give you a little more leeway for a poorly placed shot.

If most of your target shooting takes place inside 600 yards, .308 will do anything you need it to. If you plan on shooting past 600 yards on a frequent basis, I'd go with a 6.5

Barrel life: 6.5- 3500 rounds. 308- 5000 rounds.

For hunting bigger animals, between those two choices I'd pick the .308

A note on PGW, I know they have chambered Coyote rifles in WSM calibres before so that would be another option.

You will get much more enjoyment out of shooting a 6.5 creedmoor. 2 main reasons are the superior ballistics of the 6.5 bullets that will allow for more consistent hits on long range targets. Your wind calls will not quite be half but it is close. Next is the lower recoil that will allow for follow up shots. When you can stay on target better you can spot your miss, adjust your hold and re-engage for a hit.
As for shooting deer and bear you are good to go. Moose should be fine with proper shot placement and reasonable distance. If you can afford a PGW I would think you can pick up a 700 dollar bolt gun that will be much more appropriate for moose, and lighter to carrie.

Quite honestly I'd overlooked the point about hunting - a PGW with glass can be pretty heavy. Mine with the albeit heavy Razor HD Gen II and a LRA bipod weighs 19.2 lbs

Imagine carrying that around.
Much easier getting a dedicated hunting rifle with hunting requirement too different from precision.
