I have a PH 1200 action [comercial 98] anyone ever build a target gun on this action ? I always used 700 or savage or even better custom actions but I have had this action kicking around my shop for years now it is in like new condition blueing 100% not a scratch it hasn't fired many rounds buy the looks of the bolt face I have it sitting in a fajen laminate stock and last night I put a stainless barrel blank in it just to see it looks great I would like to chamber it in 6x47 lapua. What do you guys think accuracy wise for that action I will true it up and lap the lugs it stops there not interessted in sleeving.

I had a .308 Sportco target rifle that was built around a 98 action that proved very accurate, so I would say go for it. You won't match the lock time of the 700, but I think that the importance of fast lock time tends to be over stated if the other elements of the rifle (barrel, bedding, fit, sights & trigger) are optimized.

1200 Parker Hale action was used on the C3...very good out to 600 - 800 yds. You need the heavy barrel and correct stock to make it function. Should have no problem with the build although there are more Rem700 components out there at very reasonable prices. Might want to sell the 1200 and swing over to the Rem700.

I think the lock time on this action is faster than the military 98 I mesured both and it is a shorter distance that the sear has to go about 0.100 thou also I already have to many 700's I am not that fond of them I think they are overrated plus I don't like the extraction system and having to line up the recoil lug I actualy like the savage better. The stock I have is a fajen laminate with the vents aroud the barrel I will try and post some pics it looks like maybe a F class style stock not sure.

I figure if the action is fully accurized properly, then you should have a very nice target action. I've been planning the same sort of project for the future, once I find an appropriate action and finish all of the other projects I have on the go. I know that the 700 is well-proven and easy to build into a superior firearm, but the mauser-type action "speaks" to me more strongly, if that makes any sense.

Erik.

I hear you Erik I also have to many projects and I had to dig this one out I like this action seing I already have a nice stock also I'm open to trying diferent actions everyone want's the 700's but I have a tika55 short action that I made into a 22br with a gaillard light varmint it shoots as good and even better than the 700 in the same caliber.

I'm in the process of building a C3 copy. I have a 1200 Action, /The C3 stock and a few other parts. Ordered a barrel from misticplayer. Soon, very soon...

It would be no problem to make a target rifle. The 1200 action will drop into any stock made for a mauser 98. Calibers, well you decide. You can leave it as a repeater or get a single shot platform.

Try the thumbhole varaints or this one.
