Hi all, I have a 1918 lee enfeild, and would like to load up bullets for it. Primary intent is as a deer rifle, secondary is for target practice.
Where is the best place to get 310-312 bullets for loading?
And what would you recommend?
I would like a good hunting load in 180 grain, and then a cheap light bullet I can load at the right speed to have the same point of impact as the 180.
The target load could be 123 grain intended for 7.62x39, or even jacketed pistol bullets, whatever makes my practice round as cheap as posible.
Thank you

I posed a similar question on another 303 thread. Fellow there directed me to Ellwood Epps. They have an extensive selection of 303 bullets. The Campro bullets are relatively inexpensive for cheap practice rounds however they also have a good selection of hunting rounds. You might want to check them out.

I'm struggling to recall exactly... but 38 grains of 4895 under a 174 grain BT works good in Rosses...that's WW1 vintage right there.
As far as sourcing.. got no real inspiration... beg pardon on that

Haven't been into Jo Brook for a year now but they used to carry a decent selection of bullets. My local hardware store always had Hornandy or Sierra bullets. Miss the Carberry gun show that is normally held in march, brought home lots of old stock reloading goodies last year.

I have had great results with federal 180gr sp power shock, which is a Speer hot-cor bullet. It shoots the same poa/poi as PPU 174gr fmj. See if you can find either of them in factory loaded ammo or components, I’ve seen the 174gr fmj ppu bullets for sale at Budjet Shooter Supply, haven’t looked too hard for the Speer hot-cor. This is out of a ‘43 No.4 Mk1 LB sporter I picked up 4-5 years ago, if I do my part it will shoot 1”-1.25” five shot groups of a bench and bags.

Tradex has .312", 130gr Woodleigh bullets for the 7.62x39 in stock, but it seems they are out of heavier Woodleighs in .312".

I see this thread is a bit old now , but thought I'd post a few thoughts anyways.. if you plan on keeping and shooting the .303 alot - I'd like to suggest using Cast bullets.. Yes the initial investment will cost some , but you will have an almost endless supply of very good performing bullets - provided you pay attention to making them.

I used the Lee C312-185 bullet mold with a gas check.. With Cast bullets you can keep reloading costs way down, especially nowadays since a 100 count box of jacketed bullets will run you in the $50. neighbourhood.

You could pratice until your hearts content , plus even use them for Deer hunting at resonable ranges.. I experimented a bit and found a good Alloy mix that will give you almost 100% bullet weight retention plus good expansion.

A 50/50 mix of clip on Wheel-weights and Pure Lead is a fabulous formula. The pic below shows the Lee 185 gr 50/50mix bullet shot into soft wood - 18" of penetraion!.. Your jacketed bullets can never do that.

Other than Cast , CamPro .312" 123 gr Plated would be the least expensive.

Keep us posted on your trial and efforts.

All the best

The only cast bullet mould that I have left is a .314" 200 flat nose from Accurate molds - shown in their catalogue as a "clone" inspired by the Lyman 314299. I also have only one push through sizer left - it is also .314" - mostly for seating the gas checks. From Larch Valley Enterprises I was able to get a number of boxes of 174 grain .312" Woodleigh PPSN bullets - he also had some 215 grain left at the time. Also been building a stash of .312" Hornady 174 grain Round Nose. Do not know why - various makers make various bullets in quite different diameters for 303 British - so worth to pay attention to that detail if it is important to you - .3105" on up to .312" all seem to be listed. Hornady bullets seem to come in almost all those diameters. For really stupid oversize, I also found some Woodleigh .318" 200 grain - made and labeled for 8x57I cartridges. Is of interest to me because I also have some older rifles here chambered for 7.65x53 - exact same bore and weights were used in them as in the 303 British cartridge.

Jesse... Home Hardware in Brandon had some Hornady .312 150 gr. on the shelf the last time I was in town ,maybe 3 weeks ago. catnip. PS... not cheap, but at least available.

Maybe this is common knowledge but new to me. I contacted Cam Pro about their .303 bullet. Getting hard to find any .303 bullet at the moment. This was their response:
Good morning,
Thank you for your interest in our products.
Unfortunately, we are no longer producing this projectile.
All apologize for the inconvenience.

Best regards

I had seen it sold out at all the stores and no longer showing on CamPros website. I had hoped they just dialed back to meet demand of the "big 3" during this supply shortage, but I guess this proves me wrong. Sucks because it was a great price for projectiles for 303
