Last friday was able to buy 25 pheasants from a local farm. With 5 friends we released them on private property and was able to get 18 back plus 5 bonus bunnies. Some needed a boot to get in the air while others flushed great. Dogs first time on Pheasant she did pretty well and had some really solid points where I would have walked right past the bird if not for her. Great day to be out side with friends and the dog. Happy new Year.

Sounds like you all had a good time. You definitely got lots of them.
Curious, Wouldn't they associate people with feeding time if they were raised by a farmer.?
May be they thought the dogs bell was the dinner bell?
I'm really just kidding you, I know absolutely nothing about it.:)
I am glad you got out with your friends, & dog and made some memories. It's a lot more interesting than what I have been doing.

Perfectly legal, I think the only bird that requires a permit to keep is bobwhite quail.

There is an older gentleman just outside Ilderton he raises quite a few pheasants, I purchased 75, 1 week old birds off him for 3$ a piece. They were quite interesting to raise. If you do end up getting some be aware they do like to pick at each other and are quite flighty.
 
Beak peepers a pretty much mandatory if you plan on raising pheasants. They are horrible animals for killing each other off.

I wouldn’t keep them with my chickens for fear of them killing the chickens, they need a completely enclosed pen as they flush straight up when spooked.

IIRC roosters need about 25sq. Ft per bird when raising them in captivity, making keeping more than a few unrealistic without major capital investments. I’ve had a few around here for years my current pen is 125 sq.ft with 4 roosters and 2 hens, once they killed the 5th rooster, everything has settled down and is pretty calm in the pen.

For some excellent resources on learning how to brood and keep pheasants check out MacFarlane Pheasants at pheasants.com, they have some excellent info and have been doing it for about 90yrs.

I have wanted to do this at our camp for a few years now but no one else has an interest. One of our members goes to a pheasant farm north of Whitby somewhere. It's a members only type club.
 
I don’t know if laws in Ontario are changed since I left there but I know from my days when I helped out on a buddy’s pheasant hunting farm and from an annual hunt on private lands the fellows in the local retriever club used to put on anyone purchasing pheasants to release to hunt had to acquire a permit to do so. In the case of the guys I knew at the retriever club the fellow who they purchased birds from delivered and released the birds under his permit for them to hunt. My buddy whom I used to help on his pheasant operation would not sell live birds to anyone. If they wanted to hunt the birds he sold they had to do so through his operation and I have known of a few who thought they would release their pen raised birds in the hopes of establishing a population of birds on their land and in their area but it is illegal to do that as well. You can keep pheasants though, nothing illegal about that. My cousin had a flock when were kids. I used to love going to his place and sit and watch them in the pen.

Yes. You are only allowed to release 10 per year on your own property to hunt. We did 3 different properties, otherwise you need permits etc.
 
Lots of good game farms around southern Ontario holding pheasant shoots. Some much better than others. Can't name any names but there's a gentleman and his lovely wife that hold a traditional English shoot that I happen to dream about on a weekly bases. Wish they had something like this in BC

In order to own pheasants you have to have a license from the Mnr that's probably why your buddy won't sell live birds.

The "rule" of having the license doesn't seem to be inforced even by hatcheries though.
