Can a phony and permanently fixed 'silencer' be used as a barrel extension to legally bring a barrel to 18.5 on a semi auto? At the very least, to protect the muzzle as a truck gun. Don't want the noise enhancement of a flash hider.

Nope. Muzzle devices don't count towards barrel length. The rifled barrel is all that counts.

This ^^^ is the answer... Canadian law was written specifically to exclude additions, even if permanent. Stupid law by stupid anti gun liberals.

Don't believe it? I can't be bothered to do the search...

It started years ago when M1 Carbines were having barrels extended... RCMP didn't like it and pushed for legislation...

The Americans perm. attach muzzle devices to get their SBR's to 16" and thus avoid a tax stamp (if memory serves). But, as others have said...no go here.

What is measured is from end of rifling to closed bolt face. Rifling has to be continuous from muzzle to chamber.

What about shotguns?
For legal purposes, barrel length is closed breechface to the muzzle.
Add-ons don't count as barrel length.

I found this on the CBSA web page:

Canadian law specifies that the barrel of a firearm must be measured to assist in determining the firearm's classification.

Barrel length is measured as follows:

a revolver is measured from the muzzle of the barrel to the breech, immediately in front of the cylinder;
all other firearms are measured from the muzzle of the barrel up to and including the chamber, but not including the length of any part or accessory added to the barrel, including those designed or intended to suppress the muzzle flash or reduce the recoil, such as a flash suppressor (eliminator) or muzzle brake.

Sorry to muddy the waters but this doesn't make perfect sense. I've seen prohibs that were de-classified with barrel extensions that weren't rifled. The big emphasis there was '' permanently attached ''. Normally the stud or extension has nothing done to it however, no porting/venting or other mods.

Muddy away but sense has nothing to do with the law. The RCMP were pissed off at 30 M1 Carbines having an extension added to change the status, even if the extension was permanent... they were responsible along with the Liberals to change the law to state additions to the barrel were not included when measuring barrel length. They did not add any wording that permanent extensions are acceptable... This happened so long ago the majority of CGNers were probably still in diapers.

Yes, that is the current case in the USA and here in the "Past", both have been deemed to be "another country"...

I never said they did. I specificaly implied they did not count. Extended chokes dont count to barrel length, cutscompensators dont count to bbl length. Muzzle brakes, flash suppressors, or welded on barrel bits.

Not to imply you are lieing, but the bore must be continuous from muzzle to bolt face. The cfo will not accept the reclassification if it isnt. A welded on extention does NOT count.
