If I were to take my SKS out of the stock and throw it in the phosphating tanks at work would I need to do anything to protect the chrome plated barrel or the chamber? I don't actualy do the phosphating so is there anything that I should tell the guy who would be doing it before hand?

we get a lot of parts phosphate plated that have chrome on or in them. Depending on the particular solution you are using the chrome may discolor a bit but it'll return to normal with a quick polish with fine ScotchBrite. Phosphate plating is a similar to Parkerizing. Works fine on guns.

"...out of the stock..." You need to do more than that. The rifle needs to be completely disassembled and ALL the springs must be out. Then put an empty case in the chamber(a fired one will do nicely) and gently tap a cast .30 cal bullet into the muzzle, just enough to keep it there. The crown shouldn't be covered.

You won't need to worry about the chrome plating in the barrel at all, but as sunray said you will need to completely disassemble it. Oh and dont forget to polish it down to bare white metal, and then degrease it and only handle with gloves on until it gets coated, or you will get a mottled rifle.

I recently did a little .410 in manganese dioxide park, it takes major prep but looks so nice when its done.
