"...never even knew there was such a thing!...' Experimental thing near the end of W.W. II. It was called the T20. The idea was to have a larger mag capacity and the occasional use of FA. Making it was in response to the demands of the troopies. It was just an M-1 with a selector switch, a 20 round detachable mag and a muzzle break to offset the muzzle climb. The war ended before it could be standardized so it was never produced in anything but experimental numbers. Hatcher's Notebook has a short couple of paragraph's on it.
Some civlian smithies have converted the M-1 to use a 20 round BAR or M-14 mag over the years too. It requires a major redesign of the rifle though, so it's expensive and not done often.
"...a BAR in full auto..." A BAR weighs 20 pounds. Makes it easier to control. Mind you, they were made to shoot in aimed bursts not sustained FA fire.

I have heard from a few WWII vets and read in various airborne historicals that some armorers had tricked out a few Garands to fire on full auto.

One of mention was given to #### Winters of Band Of Brothers fame and so noted in the book and in an ineterview.

As far as full auto on a Garand, if anyone ever bump-fired one you know it quickly becomes an anti-aircraft weapon.

I think that it would be even more hard to controle then a BAR in full auto!

I never found the BAR hard to control on full auto(the happiest day of my life BTW). The thing is sooooo f-in heavy that it's not that much of an issue. Also, BAR's don't have full and semi auto, just a "fast" and "slow" automatic fire, with no provision for semi only...

That's a neat lookin M1 though. Didn't the Italians beat 'em to it with the BM-59, though?

Why would a selective fire Garand remind you of a Johnson?

I thought it was "muzzle brake"........:)

Looks like they got "brake" wrong as often back then as now.;)

Interesting that it appears to be set up to take magazines as well as the en blocs.

Thought you may want to see these, to go with this thread.
I took them at the Springfield Armory Museum, April 2005.
