Hi Guys,

I'd appreciate it if anyone with their own hot blue & parkerizing tanks would post some pictures of them and/or their dimensions. My brother is going to weld some tanks up for me for free. He's going to use stainless steel for the parkerizing tanks. What is the most efficient gauge of steel to use? Any input, or info would be appreciated. Looking to do some hobby gun refinishing in my garage. Figured I might as well get the tanks made up long enough to take a barreled action. Wondering what is the preferred depth & width?

My tanks are 6" x 6" x 40" of black steel about 1/16" thick and will last a lifetime of bluing. Black steel is the best for a bluing tank... just bend it up and weld the seams...

The .200" thick mentioned in the above post is way too heavy for me...

Your garage isn't a good place to do hot bluing. Everything ferrous will get a fine frosting of rust on the first bluing job. The salts get into the air and cover everything. Parkerizing is fine though. You'll likely want a bluing tank and a parkerizing tank too.
"...Black steel is the best..." It's a whole bunch cheaper than SS too.

Here is a book, if you can find it, that will give you LOTS of information about blueing tanks and setting them up!

"Professional Care and Finishing of Gun Metal" by John E. Traister.

This deals soley with the metal part of firearms. Lots of useful info in this book, inculding plating, browning and blueing gunparts.
