Good day to all,

I would like your opinion or comments on this before I do anything stupid...

I have purchased a brand new Sako 85, model Brown Bear, chambered for 338 win mag (long action). It has the integral tapered dovetail rails on the action. It also has iron sights. (the gun is on order, I should recieve it this spring)

I want to mount a Leupold VX6, 2-12 x 42 on this rifle.

I’m looking for very good quality bases and rings for this outfit. I would like the scope mounts to be “quick detachable”, as it would allow me to use the iron sights for certain situations.

I'm looking to get a picatinny rail, from NEAR Manufacturing, fitted to this rifle, but I'm afraid that the rail would block the line of sight. Can somebody confirm if the rail would render the sights useless, or not??

Any suggestions for mounts that would fit this application? Ring mounts?

Thanks for your comments and best regards!

Talley makes detach rings and bases for the Sako dovetail.

Any ring can be detachable on a Sako. Just line the rear ring up flush with the edge of the dovetail. Loosen ring clamp, slide scope off. When you reinstall the scope, line it up flush again. I do it with a couple of my Sako's, works fine but depends on which scope you use.

I've inspected the Black Bear and feel that the shallow notch will still be visible over the rail. Perhaps best to take the rifle to a gunshop and validate by placing something like an EGW on top and find out for sure.

Look no further then the Talley Rings available at ProphetRiver. Ask for Clayton, he will ship you two different height sizes to test out and return one for a refund. AMAZING business/guy to deal with. Hope this helps.
