I for one think the look of the original wood is awesome, and all that plastic looks a lil funky. i put the factory folder on which works and looks great, except for a little side play but it doesnt move when i put it to my shoulder at all. Up next, is mounting one 1913 rail on the side of the lower handguard for a light, and a rail up near the front for proper muzzle control with a vertical foregrip (a la the kyle lamb and associates technique of holding the rifle).

I was wondering if anyone here has mounted short 1913 rails onto the lower handguard, if there is enough thickness there to hold them without fear of them being torn off somehow, and how they went about mounting them. Thanks

Sure it would be possible. Get JB weld, some sand paper & some rail's. Drill the whole with the rail taped to the wood then sand both the bottom side of the rail and the top of the wood. Apply JB weld and nut's and bolt's & u should be good to go.

I used a piece of Yankee Hill accessory FF tube rail. All I did was drill two holes and thread machine screws into it with some Loc-tite. It works great for a light. Here's an old pic, but you get the idea.

no, bakelite thats a type of clay, its used on the ak74 magazines etc. this is pressed chip wood. steve-o thats pretty much identical to what i play to do to mine. NEA upper, rail on the side for a light, and a rail on the bottom near the gas for a vertical fore-grip. Im going to buy the rail itself from valhalla, and mount it. my question for you is how did you attach it to the wood itself? did you remove the lower and secure the bolt somehow to the back of the wood?

Steve-o, do you remember me asking you for a chest rig set up idea? Im going with the Tactical tailor MAV + bib from DS Tactical, ordered my hsgi denali from there and it went well. Im putting TT Ak pouches (3) on it, and plan to begin some serious carbine training and drills this summer.

I like that set-up Stevo ;)

Thanks. I've swapped out the Infratek rail for the NEA since that pic was taken. It's much better.

Sounds like a good setup.

Here's a pic with the light mounted.

Or you can go with the new style NEA lower handguard and the accessory rails.

Has anybody attached a rear pistol grip to the front handguard in order to make a beaver barf matching vertical forward grip?

I like this idea. I would reinforce the inside of the lower hand guard first though. This could be done with part of an AK pistol grip reinforcing plate cut down to size and attached with JB Weld inside the hand guard. That way it would be less likely to tear out from use. The plate could also be hammered to fit the curved surface inside the guard. The square hole would fit the grip nut and the top of the pistol grip would likely have to be modified to get a good flush fit. Why not glue the grip in place and bolt it too?

I would like to modify a lower hand guard with a picatinny rail blank to hold a flashlight on the right side, with the pressure switch on the left side by my thumb. The NEA blanks are just the right size for this.
