I just picked up an brand new M14 from AL Simmons in Hamilton so I guess they are all sold out of them :) The rifle came with one 5 round mag, sling plus cleaning kit in the buttstock. Right now the rifle is just coated in oil. I'm going to clean it up and add some CLP on the moving parts. Is there anything else I should do before I take it to the range. I'd like to mount a scope, what is a good scope mount I should look for?
I'm also looking for some extra magazines 5/20 and 5/30 where can I find the mags for resonable price?
Anything else I should know just point!!!

Thanks in advance

Use some grease on the tracks, not clp. Don't use the cleaning rod that came with the rifle, use a good cleaning rod. Get an ARMS 18 mount. And get some mags from Marstar for best price.

Do a search on the web. Lots of lubrication guides out there. Both the M14 and the M1 should be lightly greased. I use a cut down acid brush for a light coating without grease everywhere.

Take a look at some Smith Enterprise parts, I think that if I did it again I would go with his scope mount. The Vortex is a nice touch along with the "Navy front sight".Check out Vltor for some stock options.Paulinski did you notice if Al had any Benelli M4's in stock?

I don't know if there are any Benalli M4's there as I wan't looking at shotguns.

I need a cleaning rod and supplies too. What should I get. Al simmons had the general .30cal cleaning rod (I think Gunslick or something "Blue Labels") he also had .30 bore snake. What should I get. For cleaning solven I will use CLP.

Just a note, unless they have rectified it in the last 8 months, the Smith Navy sight thread pitch is wrong, the Norcs are metric. It is close but it will mot fit. Just thought you should know.

Use a one peice coated rod for cleaning and a boresnake for the field. I use the Mpro-7 stuff and the Breakfree Foaming Bore Cleaner. Wow, that bore cleaner works better than anything I have used yet. Do a search on the proper lubing as it is quicker than I could type.

The Dewey rods are the best but aren't cheap at $30-$40 (how much do you love your rifle). Wholsale Sports has them if you can deal with their crap and P&D Ent. here in Edmonton has a whole selection of caliber and length.

make sure you get the right sized dewey there's two- you want the bigger one-about 48 inches long

Good call on the Smith "Navy front sight" a bit of a oversight on my part.If you want, check out Midsouth in the US. They have some pretty good rods and cleaning supplies, I picked up some foam for the bore, it had good reviews. If that doesn't work out for ya, go with the a Dewy rod and the Otis kits, I have the Sniper and the "Master" kit nice stuff. POC for the Otis is One Shot Tactical.

TSE also had otis kits last time I was there anyway, they're great.

Board member Rooster33 used to make metric navy sights among other goodies.

+2 on the Otis, more money then the Bore Snake but better. The Otis has replacable brushes and you can run clean patches. The Bore Snake is like running a dirty patch every time. But that said, the Snake is still a good field use item if you keep it clean.

Valley Gunsmithing has metric navy sights as well.

All good advise here. A little trick for cleaning the barrel: Since you have to clean from the muzzle, you need to be carefull that you don't wear the rifling at the muzzle and loose accuracy. To prevent this, take an empty 12 gauge plastic shot shell. Cut the crimped end off and drill out the primer hole so your cleaning rod fits through it. Slide the shell over the rod, open end forward, apply your brush or patch to the rod end. Start the patch in the Flash Suppressor and slide the shell over the Flash Suppressor. Now you can clean the barrel without having the rod wear the rifling at the muzzle. Good luck shooting your M14 :)

Try it out with iron sights before you scope it. The M14 has excellent iron sights and you might surprise youself with them.

The Smith Navy Sight is threaded SAE (standard) for USGI & S.A. rifles. This is NOT a mistake by Smith.

Norinco gaslock & castle nut threads are metric.

Rooster33 has made a metric Navy style sight in the past.I am out of them, but drop Rooster a PM.

I am waiting for my M14 to show up....Marstar says soon! I am assembling some parts while I wait. I am getting a USGI synthetic stock, but I am wondering what else should be done without going overboard? Is it worth it to change the bolt out to a TRW? From what I can see they are both forged.

THE BOLT ISSUES DO NOT APPLY TO THE NEW NORCS- only the old ones, and not all of them at that- getting a trw or usgi will just make you feel better, but serve no other purpose

You will tighten up your headspace buy running a USGI bolt, but it has to be proper installed & fitted, and headspaced checked.

But when you start tightening up headspace, you may not be able to shoot Mil Surp 7.62 ammo. You might be stuck having to use handloads, or commerical ammo.

For a fun blaster, keep the Norc bolt.If you want to build a nice tight shooter/match gun, then do a bolt swap.

Keep in mind a NIW complete TRW bolt will run you around $350.00 these days!!!!! IF you can find one.......
