I am new to the 1911's, but after months of scoping out the market, I purchased what I thought was a good solid entry into the segment:

Just had CanadaPost drop it off today... and it is very clean and tidy for a used gun... there have been a few rough ones I have seen in the EE and a few deals just missed elseware, but after handling this one I am quite happy. Looking forward to some rangetime in the near future...

Any suggestions on magazines and best place to get them?
 
Welcome to the 1911 club. Congrats on a great pistola. You can check out Marstar for some 7rn GI style mags if you want to keep the look. The Mec-Gar mags are $25. but they do have a cheaper one for $16 but can't say how reliable those are. I bought a couple 8rnd mags for $20. on sale at Dlask. Going by the folks here, they're supposedly reliable. If you want to splurge, you can get some Wilson Combat mags.
 
i ordered a bunch of mags from numrich. mec-gar 7 and 8 rnd and blued para ordinance 7 rnd (these were under $10). $200 limit for canada does beat brownells $100 limit

I dont yet have my sr1911 or the mags

I think I will start with some DLASK mags, as I am not going to care about the mag hanging low while shooting targets... maybe I will get a couple GI mags when I am in Myrtle if they are decent priced. Thanks for the welcome... I spent months looking and deciding on what to get, and so far so good... I am happy. The sights are very basic, but I might just put up with them, as I may want to instead of customize, buy different 1911's... it was fun looking for a deal or hard to find ones. As the saying goes: Life is about the trip, not the destination.
 
SA GI Mil-spec was my first 1911 as well, great gun, but now the addiction will set in and you'll have to have more of them. I was warned before I got the first one that Springers don't like lead, only jacketed, which turned out to be true. Wilson Combat mags fixed that problem, now it eats pretty much anything.

I've run mostly jacketed ball ammo (200, 230 Gr RP FMJ) and some 185 Gr JHP without any issue. The only thing that has given me (rare) feeding problems are 200Gr JSWC. Basically, eats pretty near everything all the time.
 
The first time I tried it was during winter and it was mostly unreliable due to the cold and the tight fit of the moving parts. I had many failure to run into battery stoppages with it for a while. After a few hundred rounds the jams stopped.
