As the title states I'm trying to pick a bullet to use for reloading 223 for deer hunting.

I am debating between 55gr Nosler Varmageddon FB Tipped or 60gr Hornady V-max.

Thanks for any help

Both of your suggestions are varmint bullets that explode on impact so minimal penetration especially if you hit a bone. If you do want to use a 223 which is generally not recommended and illegal in a lot of provinces like Alberta you need to look at like a Barnes TTSX 62gr or Nosler 60gr Partition these are actual hunting bullets not something that is designed to explode on impact with critters.

Unless you have nothing else any rifle even a 7.62x39 sks would be a better choice to shot big game with over a 223

Both of these are among the poorest choices possible.

You want a deer hunting bullet, not a gopher bullet. You want a Barnes TTSX, Nosler Partition or other similar hunting bullet that will hold together and penetrate deep. The .223 is a reliable killer of deer and black bear when the proper bullet is selected and placed correctly.

A responsible hunter needs a combination of firearm and ammo that will get the job done not only when things go right but with margin for error for when things go wrong. If you have nothing to prove except your integrity use a caliber with enough bullet weight and construction to penetrate to the vitals and handle the velocity. Put it in the right place and when you reach the end of your hunting years and pass the torch you can do so with pride and a clear conscience.

I just had a 25-20 arrive in the mail. What bullet should I use for deer hunting with it?:nest:
Trolling, trolling, trolling keep the posts just rolling... ( that is about all I have for you)
And if you are a diligent fellow, you should be able to make it work OP
Ain't the dink I used to be; smile and joke a little now when trolling...'cause just poking fun mostly. Not as serious a fellow as I usta was, I like it better that way.

I shot a couple big does last year with the TTSX out of my 223. Heart shots at 50 yards, one went 30 yards and the other went 100 with a blood trail 3 feet wide. Lots of bloodshot meat in the shoulders.

well, within legal reasons, on private land, i have shot and seen shot Sambar Hinds with the .222 Sako of mine, it was loaded with 55gr Z max an velocity was down in around 2700..

i believe the 223 will push it much faster and it may become much more explosive.

These deer are what we compare to your elk sized, however, if it were smaller deer like WT, inside 100m , the 222-223 would work an preferably a heavier Soft point would be better than these Varmint grenades an such.

also velocity isnt your friend with small Cals and light bullets... but in sayin that the same bullet out of a 22-250 sorts out the biggest 'whitetail' sized deer we have here....

We reccomend a calibre of .243 with *debatable / 100gr projectiles for our minumum deer gun. i could argue 80gr would be a better limit , on paper.

pick the shot an place the shot, we put it into the butt of the shoulder always aiming for the 'hart'..

i have both the Hides and it shows one with 1x .22 hole, an another with 2x .22 holes , in the same side.

When we first came to Canada, my dad borrowed one of those to use on a bear hunt. One of the other guys, all Germans, just off the boat, packed a baseball bat.:)

It's amazing what you'll be willing and okay to use to kill something with when you're familiar with things getting killed. Ethics are kind of weird when it comes to the concept of killing and death, especially with the idea of food in mind, for people more familiar with it than our own blessed society.
