picking up my new rifle next week.
there is way to many options out there. i decided on a Ruger Hawkeye 270, camo synthetic stock and the matte stainless.
i have never had a new rifle before, it's like christmas!!
i usually shoot 30/30's, 303's and 30/06's. i haven't had the chance to shoot a 270.
if anyone owns one of the rugers or has an opinion. i would like to hear them.

i looked at the tikka's but i decided to go with the ruger in that model because thats what he had in stock.
i wanted to help the small hunting shop out, good deal for me and he gets to move some inventory.

always nice to help out the small local shops

Good choice. I've never actually shot one but i hear really good things. I really love the classic lines and action and hope to own one myself. Actually i think my next rifle will be a hawkeye in 7mm mag. lefthand of course.

The lack of irons was my only problem. I have the lam/ss in 300 win mag, and its been a great shooter so far. For a hunting rifle, you cant go wrong with a Ruger. I love the strength of their bolt design even though the throw is a little high. Ruger still builds their bolt guns like tanks. It will last you a lifetime. Also, I like the 270 for everything deer and up. My opinion is it's the best "everything" caliber.

I have a wood-stocked Hawkeye in .257 Roberts. Shoots pretty accurately, lovely to look at, solid as ten rocks. I had to cycle the action (using dummy rounds) about 50 times to smooth it out, but it's good now. Locks up like a bank vault. I like the floorplate release, but must admit I'd prefer a drop-out magazine. I'd also prefer the rifle if Ruger had left the tang-mounted safety as standard.
I LOVE the redesigned stock; they have really made a great ergonomic improvement over the Mk II stock.
I haven't put much time into shooting it or developing loads, but I think it could use a free-float. It's certainly hunting-accurate as-is, gets 1.5 MOA or so.
As to your choice of .270? It should do nicely for pretty much anything but big bears if you shoot it well.
