Got out for a quick hunt this evening. I was walking up a game trail that breaks out onto a dirt road. As soon as I broke on the road, to my left at about 30 yrds was a Fair sized Grizzly. As soon as he saw me, he put his nose to the air and then up onto his hinds legs. He was only up for a few seconds and then down and walking towards to me,...stopping every few steps to look at me.

I have a shout and kicked at the dirt as I raised the rifle... I had the sights centered on his head... his head was low and i would say 6 inches high would still have hit his back...

I fired one shot into the dirt right before him and he took off about 50 feet and stopped and looked back... and then i fired amnother shot and he dropped his ass to teh ground and was gone.

He was in great shape, .... nice to see.

Sounds like my yesterday but closer and two mature grizzlies I barked st them to get em out of cover as I was unsure what they were. Definetly increased my heart rate a bit

Neat story! Why didn't you shake your bell at him? Ahhh, just kidding! Closest I've ever come to a bear scare was when I was about 12 yrs old. I was out in a bush hunting rabbits with my trusty Model 39 Cooey. The bush was fairly thick, and it was a grey winter day. Holy smokes! A friggin' black bear! Upon a better look, it was an old Shetland pony. I don't think bears would have been out browsing in the middle of the winter either. When my Dad came to pick me up, I didn't bother telling him my close encounter.

Cool story, thanks for sharing! We also now have the ultimate, definitive proof for the answer to the age old question about an appropriate gun for grizzly bear defence - the one in your hands!

After a few bad experiences with bears the closest i would let one get that is coming at me walking is 25 yds, when they turn on they can move pretty quick. I had to shoot a wounded bear years ago that attacked, when he started the run at me he was a measured 38 yds, in a eye blink one shot later he was only 4 yds away when he went down.

Just some food for thought.

Im just wondering how many rounds you had in that 30-30 ?... a lot of hunters never load up the mag to full capacity when deer hunting, but in the situation you were in, Id want a belt fed 30-30. lol.

Glad you were cool about it. I would have got a heart attack.

I'm curious at to what point the trigger got pulled.
I have been chastized for the amount of ammo I pack.
Whatever I am carrying is loaded full.
And I can't think of a better rilfe in your case there Sealhunter.
Seven rounds, down two, still adds up to five.
Better than a bolt magnum with three, plus one.
Glad it worked out for you.

I can get 5 rounds off in a second a half or less..:) they can close the distance gap quick though

With this bear, (and I have encountered a few) i was following him in and wasnt overly worried, ...but ready..
When I fired my gun, it wasnt "I'm gonna die, scare him away, scare him away" it was more like,..."f off bear, get outta here"

I think he was being curious...and wanted to be up close and personal curious.

The First Pic is after the 1st shot. The second pic is a few seconds before the second shot, and the 3rd pic is immediately following the second shot
