Put down a few snares yesterday morning while I was out hunting. Only 20, but i'm hoping for luck when i go back today. It's fun setting snares and checking them.
Anyone else here at it? I set my first snare at about 5 years old is my guess...gonna bring my little guy with me to check them today

Continuing the tradition I like that!!! I just hope certain sandy ######s don't ruin this thread with their usual bs. Legalities of snares are different in each region so lets all just assume it legal an not turn this into snare bashing.

Rabbit snares? I used to walk about 3 miles every night after school checking rabbit and coyote snares I put out. Loved it. Haven't had the time in recent years, but maybe one day I'll get back into it.

Good luck with those!

A bud of mine's kid, used to run a line of snares west of Edmonton, but gave it up, as the coyotes figured out that following his trail was a good way to a full belly.

If you are setting them in an area where the coyotes are not prone to follow your tracks, you should do OK.

Cheers
Trev

I set a few rabbit snares when I was a kid. I'd actually catch the odd one and feed it to my dog. My Dad ate too many rabbits in the 1930's, and would have rather starved to death than eat any more.

Thanks for posting...brings back some good memories.

What are you using for wire? Looks like aluminum.

Used to snare rabbits a lot when I was a kid; gave it up once I was old enough to carry a gun though.

So thats what those little buggers look like up close, I see the odd one in Manitoba when deer hunting.
They call them bush bunnies or something. A bit different than our cotton tails here in Ontario.
They look like a mix of our snow shoe hare and cotton tail.

Very good to get out and have some fun.. I miss checking traps and snares, but dont miss the hard work.. I think im getting old lol..

I just got back from a vacation in Newfoundland. I bought a roll of "slip wire" that a nice lady in a general store said was what the local fellows used. It is made in china stainless steel. It is actually called and labeled snare wire. I will set some a little later this fall. Go going nice pics and a great day fro the young fellow. The stainless is nicer to work with than the old brass wire I used to use.

Thats awesome. I used to do the same thing as a boy growing up in Newfoundland. Can't seem to find time for it now. I didn't think many people set snares I guess I was wrong. Think I'll set some on my next days off, thanks for the inspiration! BTW I always used the stainless wire when I was a kid like Darryl said, I've only seen the brass stuff around here. Which one is better to use or does it matter?

Nice pictures there! Here in the Cold Lake area they are in the same color phase. Got one yesterday, but after pushing through the thick stuff for two hours my shotgun was frozen shut from the falling and overhead snow and right around zero temp's. Guess I'll have to run her dry from now on and clean her up after each trip.

Awesome! We are planning a trip into my cabin this weekend. My daughter, who is 7, loves "putting out snares". Every rabbit she brings home, her Pop gives her 5 bucks! We can't use the stainless steel wire here anymore; we have to use brass. The Pine Marten is making a comeback, and they get caught in steel snares, but can bust their way out of brass. But we can still use "picture cord" wire.
