I wish I had that much space to shoot. But whats with the bottom picture.......he shuffled his feet, pushed the sand away, whats the blue under base?

It's marks the shooting position the shooter has to shoot the stage from. You have to be able to touch the painted spot with your hand in order to engage the targets. Most of the steel safari stages are 3 targets shot from 2 positions, but some are 1 position 6 targets.
 
Yeah, it's a great competition and venue to shoot. Unfortunately there's not much like it here in Canada, and especially Ontario.

The Steel Safari and this training event takes place at the Blue Steel Ranch near Logan, New Mexico. It's about 1,000 acres. From what I understand though, the range that the upcoming Rocky Mountain Steel Quest competition is being held in Wyoming by the same group has access to 75,000 acres. Which is unreal.

You would think that Canada, with it's smaller population density and greater size, that we would have more access to the big ranges like these. Part of what makes the New Mexico site so nice is that there's barely any trees or brush to get good long line of sight through, so it doesn't need to be converted to make long range shots.
