Hey guys, here is a chance to post a pic of your sporterized 303.I am always curious about the origin of sporterized 303's. I guess some of them are one of 's,but I understand companies (or factories) like parker hale, churchill and century arms put out sporter conversions.I am sure there are more. Mabee people who have a sporter conversion could post a pic and who produced the gun. I have owned one with the plain ,uncheckered stock, it was really not a nice looking gun. I have also owned a churchill with monty carlo stock, schnable fore end flush clip , this was a nice gun. I have also seen pics on the net of 303's that look as nice as remi 700's. Just curious what these would be. When I see a 303 sporter I would like to be able to say "oh thats a..." thanks

Well, this was a godawful thing to do to a No. 5 rifle (I didn't do it! :rolleyes: I just ended up with it ...)
However, even though it wasn't built for me (it was made for my brother, who is very close in size)
I must admit that the end result shoulders and "points" more naturally than just about any rifle I've
ever had in my hands:

#4 mk1 24" King stainless barrel 17 Ackly Bee .Under the Rifle you can see a stripped mag. Notice the homemade stainless scope mounts on the 17 and the 6mm.
This is to catch the empty brass in.The rifle is used as a single shot.It extracts the brass and drops them in the emty mag.Picture shows 303 cartridge beside 17 Ackley.

I was expecting some ugly drunkenbubba guns,but you guys have some very nice sporters:D
callum you said "my first enfield" Do you still have it?. I agree, it is better to have a sporter than to melt them or crush them.
 
Yes I still have it, but it is mainly a safe queen as I'm saving up for a better scope, and I have sooo many other toys to play with now...the scope on it in the pic is now on my semi auto Mossy .22. :D

I inherited it from my Father in Law, so while I'd like the extra room in the safe, I can't bare to part with it.

BTW it is/was an all matching Longbranch...I suspect it was one of the many Parker Hale mods back in the 50's...some Gunsmith out in Sask put it together, and back then new Longbranch rifles where $20, and all over the place.

Then there is my 'Mutt' P-14...even though nothing matches on this rifle, but the receiver, and the battle sight I'd like to put full wood back on her someday...as she out shoots the #4, and can still take chargers. :)

yes and what really brings tears to my eyes is that it has a nice minty 5 land and groove barrel, dated 1947.

they did a real hack job, I've been holding on to that rifle for a few years not thinking it would make a good candidate for 45-70 conversion. but too many other projects and too little money.

and the but is so ugly I would not shed a tear it someone was to drill holes in it and use it as a crib board.

But its not the ugliest bubba that I ever owned. I'll have to dig around for pictures but it was a 1901 long lee that someone cut down to carbine lenght witha hacksaw, no crown. The then put several dovetails on the barrel fot the rear and front site. the front site was a chunk of brass hammered into a dovetail and then a screw was inserted and filed down to the right height. The wood was hacked and thinned everywhere brutal.

I sold it here for $50, it just hurt to look at.
 
I found a cool British catalogue on the Internet from the 1950s that I sadly have lost the link for that had examples of Parker Hale and BSA "sporters" made from LE and Enfield rifles, ranging from uncut military models through basic "chopped" to deluxe, selected near new, re-stocked, re-blued sporting rilfes that looked pretty darn good.

I have a BSA re-numbered force-matched basic chopped US Model of 1917 30-06 thats shoots pretty darn good.

I remember some of the Parker Hale LE 303 rifles guys had when I was a kid and still have some SIR catalogues from the 1970s listing them. they were very handsome guns and did their job well too.
 
Say what you will...I took a cut barrel No4 and made a sweet deer rifle out of it.

I've taken 2 deer in two years with it.

I have my full woods and I prefer to shoot the LB, but this is a fine rifle.

I'd bet you'd be dropping $700 to get a factory one of this quality (as a shooter). :D

Couldn't have said it any better, at 200 yards I can easily put 4 shots in a 3" grouping, thats close enough for me to use it this upcoming hunting season as my deer rifle. :D
