I've had this Norinco JW25a for a few months now. shot it a fair amount, once I tweaked the sights to make it accurate. But it was always sort of ugly. the brown finish was fake looking, and an opaque colour. More like a plastic coating than a real wood finish, plus it was an ugly grey/brown.
Last week, I took it down and stripped it, fixed it up, raised the grain, and put on 3 coats of stain(hand rubbed in between each coat), the 4 coats of polyurethane were brushed on. Again, hand rubbed in between coats.
I see why they used opaque finishes on these tho, to hide the "arsenal repairs". there was a broken off piece just behind the bolt handle that was repaired, there is a chunk missing along the right side on the forestock, and there is a real dark patch on the left side of the rear stock. All hidden by the heavy coating.
Nice-ish wood except for that. I fixed these repairs up as best I could without going overboard. its solid and smooth at least.

not sure whats up with flickr now, but the original images are quite a bit clearer...
