Overall, I am very pleased with the metal finishing. A couple of small issues need to be resolved -- one being the colour of the '52's stock!! It was supposed to be "Woodland Brown" but unless I'm colour blind you would swear its Mauve!! Quite humorous actually -- maybe my wife will like it. Apparently it is a "dead ringer" for a USGI M14 stock!?

In summary, don't expect rush service from Barret Arms, as they're extremely busy, but the metal finishing quality is very good and is worth the wait.

I like the matte black finish alot more than the olive...the olive looks more of a battleship grey in the pics and the woodland mauve ...lol.. isnt too attractive.
The 54 looks really nice with the laminate stock and the metal cleaned up....well done !That is a very nice SKS.

Thanks for the pics

Yeah, I didn't achieve the vintage military look I was after with the '52 SKS. I wanted a reddish brown colour. LOL
The stock on the '54 was chemically stripped of its ugly refurb shellac coat and given 6 applications of tung oil. It turned out really well.

I wonder what kind of comments I'm going to get from the guys at the range when I bring my Mauve SKS! Perhaps I should dress in drag! :)
I'm betting I have one of the ugliest and prettiest SKS's out there!

It looks really good, I like the metal finishing. I would've sanded the wood with 600 grit a bit more lengthwise, you can still see the Russian rough vertical sanding on the fore-end. Maybe you didn't want to remove that?

I think what you are seeing are the actual grains on the wood. The laminate is bonded together with the layer's grain in staggered directions (for strength I suppose). The stock is actually glass smooth to the touch. :D

Haven't fired them yet, and that bit of green splash in the muzzle area will last about 2 rounds. I will be taking the green one out this weekend. I am having the gas tube on the black one re-sprayed, so I will have to wait a week or so until it comes back.

Just an FYI: both are completely parkerized and Arma-coated. One is Arma-coated in olive (army) green, the other is Arma-coated in matte black. One thing is for certain, the matte black finish is slightly less durable than the satin finish on the green one. Both finishes completely hide the original tooling marks, and give the metal bits a modern, new finish. It was worth every penny.

4 coats of dupli-color OEM satin black "trim paint", a metal 5/30 round magazine, and... redemption:
