I am amazed at the variations in run of the mill 22 ammo. We went for so many years in sporting rifle cometitions, just shooting the commonest, cheapest shells available, CIL Dominion "Superclean." Certainly accurate enough for any competition, rifle or pistol, where the firearm had to be held in ones arms, without artificial suport, especially when one third of the rifle shooting, and all the pistol shooting was off hand.
Fairly recently I acquired another Winchester 69A, to acompany my long time 69A that has excellent aperature sights on it.
The new one has a good 4x rimfire scope on it and I have been testing the accuracy of various brands of lower priced ammo. All testing was done at 50 yards, with good rest.
The best I tested was CCI Blazer. Five shot groups were consistantly under one inch. A young lady used my rifle to shoot two groups in the half inch area with it.
Kamlooky will argue with me about Blazer, but when he was with me for a good shoot out at the range, I borrowed his CZ to make the best group of the day---with Blazer ammo!
Something that some people may find strange, but I don't, is that I did this same testing, two seperate times, using a well scoped Weatherby 22, and the results were a mirror image of what the Winchester 69A did. Also, Kamlooky's Win 69A did the same, also.
CCI Blazer was best and Winchester Wildcat was worst, most groups over two inches, with all rifles tried.
Second best was maybe a tie, between Federal Lightning and Winchester hollow point in the big boxes.
Target type ammo is always the slower variety, but Blazer, and all the others I tried, are high speed versions.
So far I haven't tried the standard speed CCI, which theoretically should be better.
With the kind of accuracy I am getting, I can't see buying expensive target ammo for a sporting rifle.
