Looking for pictures of SKS bayo mount / cleaning rod retainer ground off.

Removed the bayo because I don't like it on there, would rather have an Otis kit in my pocket and prefer the front to look cleaner.

Anyone have some good pictures of the job they have done grinding the excess metal off ?

Thank you.

I didn't "grind off" the bayo lug, but i did however cut the lug and barrel sleeve off right behind the front sight.... looks very clean.

Yes, I realize this is an option and it looks great on the rifles I've seen it done.

Trying to keep it simple. My idea of an SKS is basically stock with practical but very useful and inexpensive mods.

If you don't like the bayonet... why did you buy a SKS?

Just asking.

Fair question..

I like the rifle itself. It's a very well made practical tool.

The bayo is of no use to me and I like the idea of removing any unnecessary weight.

Bunch of wise guys I see.

It was a serious question however.

I can take a joke though, so keep em coming.

None the less, if anyone has some pictures of this mod I'd appreciate it.

I cut and crowned one down to 18.6 and installed a Prince50 sight near the gas tube. It wasn't overly accurate before, and is considerably better now even with the shortened distance between the sights. I read somewhere that guys in the US cutting them down to 16" are getting good results, something to with the optimal barrel length for the round and less vibration. Mine is light and points well, and I enjoy shooting it most. I would either just take the bayo off or go for the full bubba and cut it down. You will of course have spare unmolested versions stashed in your safe!

I bought an extra SKS just so Bubba can play with it :). And he did grind off the bayo mount. Then I took that Canadien Tire blueing crap and blued it. Looks good to me.

A guy i know hack sawed only the lug off his SKS, and re blued it. It looked far better than it did before ( as just a naked bayo lug) ... the lug will hacksaw off quite easily, and thus, by cutting it off by hand, there will be no risk of the components getting hot enough to mess with the steels tempering.

ON a practical note regarding a PRACTICAL SKS, i think the bayonet is silly, bulky, ugly and could potentially intimidate other hunters who are not familiar with military rifles (" a scary Russian gun with a knife stuck on the end ")

id say DO IT. purists will be purists.

If it's a rarer gun, leave it be, if not have at 'er. If you aren't concerned about resale carefully take it off, it will look better and drop some barrel weight.

It's a 54 Izzy laminate, mint condition, looks like never issued.

None of that matters to me when it comes to firearms. I'm not into bubba SKS's myself (although I really appreciate the excellent upgrades some guys do), I'm interested in simple practical and useful mods.

Thanks for the comments so far. Just wanted a good look at it already done before I went ahead with it and maybe some ideas to accomplish it. Advice on hacksaw vs too much grinding to avoid overheating is good, appreciate it.

Warren makes a great point that has otherwise been unstated to date of my participation in this forum. I agree with the removal but only to the extent that you are left with an odd looking grab hook if its not trimmed. And trimming it seems pointless when the whole works can be removed. In my view, if you are planning to add a scope, remove the works. And if you like iron sights, I doubt the dangling bit of bayonet mount will bother you much.

It would be a shame to alter a nice Izzy, is it blued? Perhaps it could be your keeper or you could sell it and get a Tula, which shoot just as good.
Notice I used the word "alter" I don't want to offend you by using words like "Bubba" or "hack" I'm thinking of the IZZY here, there aren't enough of them.

I removed the lug on a Chinese Type 56 SKS. Worked out well and I reblued the cut portion. This one shoots 1 1/4" groups at 100yds even with the bayo lug removed.

I understand, respect and appreciate your comments here but an sks TO ME is a really excellent weapon for the money. IMO opinion it looses it's fantastic value for what you are getting very quickly when you go full bubba with it. The add ons add up very quickly which IMO takes you right into the "might as well buy an 858" territory.

Short of the quick change mag option all the upgrades seem to be for improved weapons manipulation, some of it accomplishes this, some not so sure.

All that aside I've never been a purist nor have I've ever been interested in the collectable angle. When it comes to an SKS I'm interested in little mods that improve the rifle without spending a lot on it.

Mods to date:

- thin target front Tech Sight
- TS200 aluminum rear sight (might swap out to the steel version)
- trigger job
- remove bayo / cleaning rod
- tried Murray's excellent spring loaded firing pin but it's really only necessary for commercial loads (replaced with original) and experiences FTF's with surplus
- removed rear sling attachment
- flush cup installed on right side of stock near rear (for patrol carry)
- Blue Force Gear VCAS Standard AK sling

Only other things I want to do to it:
- remove bayo/cleaning rod mount (partially for ascetics, partially so its one less thing to get snagged on branches, partially to remove any unnecessary ounce)
- possibly come up with some kind of latch (like the original) for removing the TS200 for cleaning

About as bubba as I'd go with it would be the BC tactical mount and some kind of red dot & a cheek riser but don't imagine I'm going to do this. Saving that for the 858.

That TO ME is a practically improved SKS that still has "value" (I don't mean RETAINING value) because I didn't spend an extra $1000 on a mag well setup, the threaded front sight assembly, "tactical" stock, mags... etc. etc.

Don't get me wrong... I love all that bubba stuff. But if I'm going to go that route I'd rather do it to an AR or 858.

Not a lecture or anything, just detailing what a great usable SKS is to me. I choose the Izzy's (have two actually) because it is the best example of an SKS to me.
