So my Brother-in-law decided he wants to pursue the sport of "Mounted Shooting" after a competition this past weekend and he needs two Colt-type revolvers chambered in .45colt...But he's on a tight budget. I saw these on Marstar's website so I thought I'd ask about their quality. All they have to do is shoot black powder blanks consistently and withstand being dropped in the dirt and/or being stepped on by the horse...Should he save his money for something better?

Lock-tight the screws (with non perminant lock-tight), he won't find anything better at the price (or for a lot more).

I've seen a number of reports on CGN about the lack of support from the Canadian Taurus importer. You may want to search on this aspect before deciding.

Another option would be to get one of the .22 revolvers if the frames are large enough and just shoot starter pistol or Ramset blanks. A LOT less fussing around with loading black powder and percussion caps. Some of the nice single action .22's of this sort look very much the Colt cowboy style.

I'm not sure, being new to all this myself, but even if he doesn't ever plan on shooting real bullets from the gun he would still need to qualify for his restricted PAL and all the rules that go with that just because they are capable of shooting the real thing. If I'm all wet on this then I'm sure someone will correct me soon enough.

I don't shoot competitively at all, but I have a Pietta 5.5" .45, and it's been a great piece to shoot.

Piettas

I've got a couple in .357 Mag to compliment my 1961 mfg Colt SAA in .357 Mag:

Mounted shooting? If only blanks are used then it is not shooting at all, just noise making. Are there no targets to shoot with wax as in fast draw competitions?

Balloons - which get popped if the competitor is on target, either just by partially burned black powder or by something like walnut-shell case-cleaning media loaded over top of the powder charge .....
