Recently got a Boyds thumbhole stock for my Remington 783 in .223

Fits good and looks nice, but even the crappy plastic factory stock has dual pillar bedding blocks.

This quality wood stock has nothing. The action just sits in the wood.

Should this be pillar bedded?

thank you.

I figured. I also figured they would come with it. A bit disappointed with Boyds for skimping on that. its not much more labour when you are already tooled up and its peanuts for parts cost.

I am assuming I can do it myself? need the pillars, some epoxy and the appropriate sized drill?

While Boyd's stocks can be quite nice, they aren't usually 'high end' stocks.

Try shooting it first, then see if you think it needs the pillars......

I put pillars and bedded my Mosin in a Boyds stock and it's very accurate for what it is. I have consistently group 1/2 MOA with it. It was more work to install but in my opinion, worth it.

Check out my pillar bedding thread. It was a Sako but same idea. A good counterbore will be a huge help.

Don't know why you think it should come with pillars. Boyd’s doesn't advertise them as coming with pillars so it shouldn't be a shock that they aren't there. I have a few Boyd's stocks and have only bedded the action, no pillars, and am happy with the results. If pillars were important to you maybe you should have researched more and bought a more expensive stock that came with them. Boyd's are a decent replacement stock for the money IMO. I just recently put one on a Savage Axis build that I have, it went from a shotgun type pattern at 200 yards to moa or better. It isn't a competition gun by any means but suits my purposes well now.

thank you! I will probably just do the pillars for now. Where do I get a good kit for a reasonable price?

does it tell you what size drill etc you need?

Sorry, didn't see your reply until now. I used to order my pillars on Ebay but the last batch I got were so out of round I never used them. You can improvise pillars as has been suggested, depending on your build it might seem silly to try to save money on pillars. Any smith will make them, some of them might be too busy. Industry standard seems to be 1/2" OD nominal, should be finished at around .480" to allow for epoxy. ID can be to taste, on Remingtons that's usually 5/16".

You will need a counterbore with pilot to open your holes properly. In my case it was a 1/2" counterbore with 5/16" pilot. I order my tooling online from Travers tools. If you have a local shop might as well use that.

What sort of drill are you using with your counterbore out of curiosity?
