I just read in one of my gunsmithing books how to build pillar posts. I was wondering which one is the best way?

1: Pillar post in a synthetic stock

2: Full lenght aluminum block with 2 action screws.

I'm asking because my Choate stock has the full lenght v block for my Rem700. I would like to get a Mcmillan later on but do they have the full lenght or the pillar posts? The posts also have the recoil lug. The full lenght have only the action screws. Is there one that should be torqued more or less? Thanks

The purpose of a pillar is to prevent a light synthetic stock from collapsing the bedding and the damage and accuracy problem that would follow.

It doesn't matter if you use pillars or a bedding block, they both require proper glass bedding to get the most accuracy out of it.

Torque - a maximum of 65 inch pounds for me... that's about 4 foot pounds. When the bedding is correct the action screws tighten up fairly solidly quickly.

My Millennium Target Rifle has a Flexibed system. The V block with 2 Adiprene strips along the side that the action sits on. The V block is bedded into the stock.
No recoil lug between the action and barrel.

My other three target rifles are pillar bedded. The pillars are bedded into the stock, both have recoil lugs between the action and barrel. On all of these rifles the action sits on the pillars but the action is 100% glass bedded. ie you can see the pillars flush with the bedding.
