So I'm looking to get some bi-tone action going on my XD9. I want to "silverize" the slide, trigger, mag release, and possibly the grip safety. What I'm not sure about is how to do this.

My XD sitting on the stand I made with the table saw that nearly took my thumb a week earlier. (Back in August)

Options:

1. Gunkote
2. Duracoat
3. Another type of coat/cote/kote
4. Send it to a gunsmith/refinisher.

What I'm looking for is a metallic silver/brushed stainless finish. More like a silver car and less like a chromed Deagle. Basically something metallic that's not a flat colour but not mirror.

Something like this: http://www.autobase.com/photos/large/02440906.jpg
Or possibly this: http://admin.dealermaid.com/admin_inventory/inventory_pictures/2GTEK19T231162840-1.jpg

I wouldn't mind doing it myself since I like that kind of crap, but if there is someone who's really good at it and doesn't charge too much (~$50) I'm totally up for that.

Requirements: ~$50 or possibly less, durable finish, looks good.

Thumb!

The trigger and the grip saftey will be the hard parts, they're plastic. Maybe some sort of epoxy finish will work, but I wouldn't bet on it. The slide can be bead blasted clean and hard chromed or electroless nickeled. Also the mag release. Why not just trade it on a factory two tone? Far simpler and cheaper in the long run? If it's a newer gun you'll find the finish far tougher then the old one. (my 9 is an older one, and shows finish wear, the .45 acp is hanging in well, but it's new yet, time will tell)

the only thing I can offer is bead blast the slide then hardcrome it. The plastic parts you may be SOL. The one problem is that hardcrome is about $200.00 - $300.00 but that will give you the look you want on the metal parts.

The thum looks like it had some fun

I'd get your magnet out if I was you....:D
An XD's trigger and grip safety are made of steel....the safety lever inside the steel trigger is indeed plastic, though.

I'm thinking if you'd just bought a Glock you wouldn't need to disguise your gun! :D
(Hey... what are you doing with that hammer... no... no.. ouch... take a joke, man!)

BURN THE INFIDEL!! BURN HIM!!!!!!

ugh, glock, barf. now I gotta go eat a cowpie to get the taste outa my mouth from saying that word......

;)

(hows the new glock ontgunner?:D )

Ouch on that thumb! Yikes!!

Whatever you decide you'd like to do with that XD9 I would be seriously interested in a few pictures afterwards, as I'm sure many of us would be! :)

Check out xdtalk, there is a few examples of really nice finishes on XD's.

IIRC there is a guy that that took some lubricating oil and some steel wool and made a real nice non-reflective silver finish... he then coated it with something... Looked really good though.

(I couldn't find the link to that pic though)

So nobody's checked out the different "Kotes/Cotes/Coats" on their own guns? I'm more interested in a do-it-yourself type deal. Anyone know how the finishes look and hold up with the different brands?

That looks sharp, but I don't think I could bring myself to do that to my XD40. Looks great just the way it is in my opinion.

That looks like the product of the Quebec Provincial Imbreeding Team's magnum opus after 15 generations of dedicated teamwork, meaning it's almost as ugly as a glock. :D

Here is a picture of how it looks now after I had it Parkerized. The early version Brunial fished suffered badly from holster wear. I had painted it Anodizing red for something to do until I got it parkerized... I even won an IPSC match in Standard with that... the other guys were laughing too hard to seriously compete.

Wow, it looked like your wife got ahold of it after finishing her nails.
