Pinned Or Threaded Barrel?

hey everyone,

just wondering how to determine if my chinese sks has a pinned or threaded barrel. are the pins usually visible where the barrel goes into the reciever. mine has no visible pins so am i safe to state that it is a threaded barrel?

If it's threaded there is a tapered reinforce where the barrel butts up to the receiver face.

If it's pinned, you can see all the way around the barrel where it goes in.

by the way, there is nothing wrong with pinned barrels - the only problem with a pinned barrel is if it was married to a receiver designed for a threaded barrel. Big NO-NO.

and even if you do, as I said, it is no big deal if the receiver was designed for it.

What is the origin of this SKS?

A pinned barrel is probably just as reliable as a threaded one except that this is an indication of an attempt to reduce the cost of making these rifles. I would be more concerned of the quality of other parts that have been stamped, etc, to reduce costs.

To me as an SKS collector, this is like comparing the pre and post 64 Winchesters.

By the way, the pinning procedure is carried out by heating the receiver and inserting a cold barrel into it. This creates a very tight fit when cooled.

About the only thing I can see as an advantage to having a threaded barrel would be when one tried to replace said barrel down the road.

Personally I'm not really worried about it.
