I'm planning on refinishing the surface of my newcomming Norc 1911. Now I have products to choose from : Duracoat, Armorcoat , Cerekote etc.
Would like to hear the opinions of the DIY gun owners , which one is better and why.

Cerekote claims to be the best, Sig Sauer uses it on their Scorpion. Personally, for a Norc I would just Parkerize or rust blue after I dehorn the entire gun.

Just trying to avoid all the PIA with the CFO ATT to the factory for recoating, and maybe to save some money and time.

Not a PIA at all. I've done this a few times already with complete ease. Just call, tell them what it's for and for how long, get your ATT to the post office, and that's it...set up in 10 minutes. I've sent three of my pistol frames to Barret at Armacoat without any issues.

I personally love the Armacoat finish. Very durable, doesn't fade, chip or flake off. Even after thousands of rounds through them, they still look as good as the day I got 'me back from Barret.

I have done DIY cerakote on several shotguns, a few rifles and a Norinco pistol. I built myself a small oven to cook the rifles in but you could use a toaster oven or your range oven for the smaller parts when the missus isn't home.

I've put close to a thousand rounds through my pistol since I Cerakoted it and the finish is holding up beautifully. Both from holster wear and from the action cycling.

Cerekote wins hands down

How did you prepare the gun for the coating ? Did you had to polish it before ?

I used Arma-Coat on a m&p 22(polymer frame/aluminum slide) and an AR(anodized aluminum). No sanding or polishing of any part, just a good degrease with brake clean, and spray away.
Barret at Arma-Coat recommended a sand blast of the AR for the best possible bond, but I decided not to bother and the finish has held up really well.

I was hoping for some wear and tear marks on the guns, but it looks like the finish is too strong for that!

They sell a great kit with more than everything you'll need to paint some 4 or 5 rifles. Cost me about $80 for the kit and I believe I used less than a third of the paint on 1 pistol and 1 rifle.

No need to contact the CFO for an ATT, plus, I enjoy working on my guns.

Overall, I was really impressed with Barrets knowledge, the completeness of the kit, and the quality of the finish.
