I'm looking for recommendations for a pistol that my girlfriend can get her little hands around. My XD is too big for her, and I have been keeping my eye out for a small grip pistol, like the Walther p22 or similar (Why can't we get the XD Subcompact up here?!!!! Silly laws). There was a Beretta Cheetah for sale on the EE, but it sold very quickly. If anybody can recommend a good pistol in .22 or 9mm that comes in petite, then I would appreciate the heads up. Thanks.

Hi Redstar,

For the lady friends I bring shooting, I typically have them use a CZ-75B for 9mm. It's simple, easy to handle and the grip is small enough for a 5'4" girl to use quite effectively. Ask Cass_GRFH on CGN here. She loves her little pistol.

If 9mm is too much, try a P-22. I know a handful of young ladies and quite a few guys that own them and really enjoy them. The Sig Mosquito is also a nice choice. It's a coin toss between the two.

Just my $0.02.

First rule about handguns, is they are like shoes. There is nothing worse than taking a bad handgun to a dance (er, that didn't sound right). Make that firing an ill-fitting pair of high heels (umm, not right either). Anyways, if you can get here to try on more than one kind of dancing slippers (still not sure). She will know what fits best, and you'll know what looks best on her.

For my free advice, a Ruger MkII is a handsome handgun that will probably feel good in small hands. If not, you will be able to resell it easily.

The Browning HiPower has the shortest trigger reach of all the guns I've had. The 1911's are good too but hard to find in 9mm.

The new pistols with changable backstraps look promising. Put out a call for shooters at your range to let her try all the options.

What about a Trojan Ranger from Armco?

How about a S&W M&P9....Its got 3 backstraps for different size hands....very good pistol at a very reasonable price.....go check it out....You may want one for yourself.....

For 22's, my girls find the Rugers fit their hands very well.

In 9mm, a Hi Power is very comfortable, small grip and short trigger reach as prproulx said. The Baby Eagle (CZ) grip is good, but has a long double action trigger pull. In new 9mm's the Steyr M9-A1 is very comfortable for them with smallish grips and a reasonably short reach to the trigger.

In 9mm we usually shoot slightly reduced loads and it makes it very comfortable for them to shoot a lot.

M&P comes with 3 itenerchengable grips, small one should fit her fine. Don't overlook the new Beretta 90-two; you can get a slim grip for...Also Steyr M9A1 has a pretty small ergonomic grip.

Girls like hot looking gun and big cal, that is their nature. Don't buy .22. Buy something you like. If she goes, the gun stay. If she stay, you go with the gun :D

Check out the link. I love this thing. The grip is kinda small for my hands but my wife likes it. I just spent the entire day at the range plinking away with it. It doesn't like the Winchester hollowpoints that Walmart sells, but it's happy with Remington stuff. Jams are simple to clear. I spent the entire day at the range today. I put 1500 rounds through it. I shot a little oil into the action every 200 - 300 rounds, and it was happy. It's a bit of a bear to field strip the first 2 or 3 times you do it, but once you get the sequence down, you can have it from a pile of pieces, back together in about 2 minutes.
$309.95 at a store here in Edmonton. Probably close to the same price elsewhere. Comes with 2 mags. Extra mags are 22-25 bucks each depending on where you look.

I just baught a buckmark ss camper with a bull barrel. It was supposed to be for me but my wife likes the feel of it so much that I hardly ever get to touch it. It has a much nicer grip that the ruger 22/45 and was a fair bit easier on the pocket. The other thing that I appreciate about this gun is you can shoot all day and not have to re-morgage your house for it.

sounds like a good trade.......somebody had to say it

:D Yeah, your right, some days I would make that trade in a heartbeat. :D
Some good advice guys, I appreciate all the input. I am partial to the hi power and the 1911 in 9mm, and I am kind of leaning that direction. As was mentioned, I should try and find something that I like, just in case. I do like that Ranger II for sale at Armco. Decisions, decisions.

Well... My wife loves hers!

My youngest daughter(19) has no trouble with my CZ75B in .40cal. the frame is same size as the 9mm,the feel is the same as a Browning Hi-Power. it comes in 9mm and you can get a .22lr sub cal kit for it,read ,lots of cheep shoot.

My CZ75B is a little big for my 5'6" GF but she can shoot it OK in SA.
DA is too long and the Mag release/Slide release are far away and require support hand or reposition.

My 12 year old daughter fits the 75b perfect but she's 5'8" and has large hands and feet. (size 11 womens)

Yeah,it can be a bit of a stretch, the grip on the Browning is shorter then the CZ,makes it easier to get to the slide release, but the mag release is about the same.

If you got the cash look at a H&K P7M8,the mag release is on the right side of the pistol IIRC so she can use her index finger for that, its easy, I'am left handed so that how I have to do it ,she probable won't even have to change her grip to do it,and the safety is in the grip/cocking lever,as is the slide release.

How about a wheel gun,like a S&W "J" frame???
