i see in shotgunnews one of the ads in the calssified you can buy a 1911 unfinished frame .where in Canada can you buy one ?if you can?would like to finish one if i could.

Can someone buy all the parts separately and make his own gun? If so where do you get the serial number from?
If the parts are finished, and only need assembly/fitting, then they probably already have a serial number. Otherwise, you can engrave your own, so you have something when you register it. And you do need to, unless you have no problem breaking the law.

Huh! That makes for an interesting project! I'll keep that in mind!

The frame is the part that is the restricted item in Canada. In order to buy a frame it must be registered & has to have a serial number already on it & it will be on file with CFC..
In that case it would be registered as a receiver ( frame ) only.

If you want to build that frame into a complete gun, no problem as long as the barrel length is legal. Then you contact CFC with the details & it will be changed from a frame only to a complete gun. The serial number & make of the frame remains the same.

The quoted post above nailed it.

For example you can purchase a Norinco 1911 frame & complete it into a finished 1911 pistol by adding the other necessary parts.

That said, members should also be aware of the following CGN Equipment Exchange [aka EE] rule:

EE Rules said:
5. No for sale (FS)/or want to buy (WTB) ads of illegal or questionable items. Questionable items include, but are not limited to:

6. Sales of homemade firearms are not allowed:

Magazine Kits.
"80%" or partially completed receivers or receiver stampings.
