I am having trouble finding a pistol grip for my Winchester SXP Defender. Apparently no one is making aftermarket accessories for this shotgun yet. This is a really good shotgun but I did not realize before I purchased it that there was a serious lack of parts available for it. I am wanting the pistol grip because I will mainly using the shotgun for Bear Defence as I am a forestry worker. So if anyone could guide me in the right direction to find one it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I can't remember who it was, but someone on here posted a pic of an SXP with a pistol grip. I believe it was a modified Hogue Tamer.

I`d definitely recommend a stock though. Especially if you`re using it to defend your life.

It was a Hogue tamer for an 870, he said it needed a little filing/grinding to fit but didnt sound like major surgery. Before you pistol grip it and toss it in the truck be sure to practice with it. A whole pile of dickwads will bombard this thread spewing about how useless a pistol grip only shotgun is. They probably hurt themselves doing something stupid. Stick with light loads and practice until your confident. Then practice some more.

Thanks kagia and supernova. Good to know that a pistol grip for the 870 can be modified to fit. I want to go pistol grip to save some weight and I am going to attach a scabbard to my work vest for it.

Good advice too supernova. I bought a flat of 7 1/2 target shot to practise with as well as practising with 00 buck and slugs. Actually surprised how accurate the slugs can be.

I carry Bear Bangers and pepper spray with me all the time when working and probably shot off 8 bangers this summer at bears. Never had to use the pepper spray though. Figured I needed to get the shotgun to add to my protection because I saw and heard way more bears this summer than ever with a couple of persistent ones sizing me up. Way too many Cougars here on the Island now too with a full grown man being attacked this summer. He was able to fight it off though.

Thanks again guys

To echo supernova's advice... though it is definitely easier to handle a shotgun with a stock, it is by no means impossible to effectively shoot a PGO shotgun as long as you practice and use a good technique. This might be hard to convey over Interwebz but I'll try...

Two methods I have found work really great for PGO shotgun are:
1. Instead of firing from the hip or firing with the shotgun out in front of your face (as if it had an imaginary stock), hold the shotgun at chest level and rest your shooting side forearm along your chest parallel to the ground. Within close range, shooting level from your chest assists with your aim since your whole torso helps you reference where the shotgun is pointing. Your arm braced against your chest aids in managing recoil.

2. Use a single point sling and hold the shotgun out in front of you (as if it had an imaginary stock) but push out with both hands making the sling taught. I think this feels weird to some people who are used to pulling in the stock tight with a shotgun and you are now doing the reverse but this greatly mitigates the recoil. I feel this method takes more practice and doesn't allow you to shoot quite as fast as 1 above, but the added benefit is you can still aim down the barrel/bead.

As supernova said, practice lots with light loads and you'll get the hang of it.

I also have no shame in admitting I only shoot birdshot or reduced recoil buck/slug through my PGO shotgun EVER because I r too scared to shoot the heavy stuff heh

Can anyone verify that the 1200/1300 stocks will fit the SXP as I also am looking for an adjustable stock/pistol grip for my SXP Defender. Thanks
