Not really sure.
Hello all this may be a very obvious answer to my question, I know that you can have short barrels on shotguns as long as the overall length is 26 inches. Now I'm wondering what happens when you have a shotgun with just a pistol grip and no butt?. Do they still stay non restricted as long as it is 26 inches long?.

sorry to hijack. but does anybody know that if you put a top folding pistol grip on a remington 870 with a 14" barrel does it still meet the minimum length?

The Spec Ops folder that is soon to be released by Knoxx Industries is based on the breachers grip that they sell.
Apparently the Breachers grip is long enough for the 26" min. so I would assume that the new Spec Ops Folder will be long enough as well!

Anything under, it goes prohib, not restricted.
Not true.

If you CUT the barrel yourself or otherwise "modify it yourself" to make it under 26" it becomes prohib.

If you install a "factory customization" like a 6.5" dlask barrel and just a pistol grip, voila, restricted 870 :D

(you have to get it verified of course, re-registered, etc.)

You would have to get it re-registered as restricted.

so just confirming. if i put a folding stock on my 870 with a 14" barrel and it is under the limit then it will only become restircted?

Thanks,

Sean

Just to clarify a bit the cop stock is the top folder, the spec ops collapses like an AR stock.

As long as you phone the CFC and do the "over the phone" verification. I wouldn't leave it in that configuration untill your new reg cert arrives.

Cop Stock is a folder.
Spec Ops Stock is Collapsable.
Spec Ops folder is basically the Breacher's Grip with a wire folder similar to the original Cop Stock.
You can look at pics on Knoxx Industires web page.

There is, but there are SO many damn FRT numbers for 870's (I think they counted 59 of them), it'd be hard to track it down.

If they can't find the correct FRT#, they'll make up a new one just for you :D

My understanding is that DLASk will have a factory 8" 870 NON RESTRICTED. Dont ask me how but apparently its under the 26" rule and factory. im looking forward to checking them out.

Im a Mossberg 500 guy but the shorty factory DLASK would be a welcome addition to the gun locker.

An 870 with a 14" stock measures over 20" from the buttstock to the front of the receiver so an 8" barrel would still be over the 26" mark with room to spare. The magazine tube would require shortening by about 4" which would cut down on your shell capacity.

It would be a great bear gun and lots of fun at the skeet range.:D

This is correct... a commercially manufactured 8" barrel and pistol grip (no stock) would give you a VERY SHORT 12 gauge shot gun (2 or 3 round I believe) and it would remain NON-RESTRICTED.

My new 'rinco HP9 with a 14"barrel, and a knoxx spec ops stock.
Just arrived in the mail today...

According to my measuring tape the 26" mark from the barrel to the stock is approx where the back of the grip is attached to the collapsible/adjustable stock is. And in the pics on Knoxx's website the breaches grip appears to have a larger overhang part off the grip...so it should be just longer then 26" with a 14" barrel.

Mark,

With all due regards, a "a commercially manufactured 8" barrel and pistol grip (no stock)"... would be restricted.

With a stock and if it mesured over 26" OAL all would be good.
